phoned in sick...went to a festival...got caught...can I get sacked ?

I haven't had one day off in the last 20 years.
In fact I even went to work when I was on the dole.
Today my bosses are trying to talk me into taking some holidays because I've got 5 weeks to get in before christmas.

Taking false sick days is not for me. When i worked for others I had a sum total of 4 sick days in about 7 years and they were genuine. I did however have quite a lot of half-assed days due to Friday morning hang overs.

Not sure about this not taking holiday thing people have mentioned! Holiday is good for you, keeps workers happy and refreshes. Don't be a hero :p I had 8 weeks off last year and i'm daisy fresh. Does that make me lazy? No...it means i manage my time well!

I take all of my sick days that i'm allocated for a year. I like my job but i'm not bothered about furthering my career. As soon as i have that cash in the bank i'm off to another country :)

lots of high horses in this thread!

/edit what happened in the end? have you had the hearing yet?

I used to do voluntary work for the Samaritans,
i remember ringing up to phone in sick one day and the bar stewards talked me out of it. :D

I have taken sickies a long while back, they were due to me absolutely hating the role I was in at the time, and having a new gf I really wanted to spend the day as well as the previous night with... I am now in a job with a lot of personal responsibility that I enjoy and find challenging, surprise – I haven’t had any time off ill since I started the job – though I managed to get sent home one day as my director thought I looked terrible!

I can sympathise though, the other half works in the care industry. She has had a long string of really challenging clients (regularly comes home with bruising, bite marks etc.) she asked her boss if she could get a couple of days off soon just to recharge her batteries and was told that there was no time she could have holiday until after August. I know that she is going to get ill in the next few weeks just through the levels of stress she is facing but she assures me management like this is rife throughout the whole industry.

just thought I'd update this...
had the hearing today, they said what I did DID amount to gross misconduct (due to lying), I was given a written warning that stays on file for 12months

to everyone who hoped I got sacked....I hope you lead rich and prosperous lives, or do I mean 'get it up ye' ? :p

Ha ha, good luck in keeping your nose clean for the next 12 months..

Hope you learnt a valuable lesson..

DON'T ANSWER THE BLOODY PHONE. ;)

How did you get nothing more than a warning for Gross Misconduct? I thought that's instant dismissal nearly everywhere.

Check out Thatchers children in this thread giving it the old 'I've never had a day off in 80 years'.

It's easy to lecture somebody who detests their job when you're in love with yours. As mentioned in this thread already, if somebody is skiving off work it's down to a number of elements including the work itself, the work environment and the management - all of which are likely crapola.

Rubbish. I've had jobs that I've disliked but rather slack and defraud the company I've applied for other positions and moved on.

Yes, a few of us do have integrity...

Real integrity is about doing what's best for you. Not enslaving yourself at some tinpot office job, lining somebody else's pockets for peanuts. Some people are stuck in dead end jobs which they only do for the money! Shock horror.
