Photography Topic thread...

Schoolboy errors.

The OH graduated yesterday and tasked me with taking a few shots.

1st mistake--The above
2nd mistake--Took my 18-105mm lens ONLY.
3rd mistake--Went to the loo and when i got back the queue was massive so ended up at the back of the auditorium. See mistake 2.
4th mistake-- Poor lighting and distance meant upping the ISO.
5th mistake--NOT lowering ISO for every other shot taken afterwards (indoors, Outdoors, Closeup's, portraits)
6th mistake --NOT letting all the subjects know exactly when I'm taking a shot. Dont think there is one group shot where everyone is looking at the camera or has their eyes open.
7th mistake--Thinking as I have a pretty decent camera I'm now david bloomin bailey.

8th mistake--Telling the internetz of my failings.

My workflow I've recently started using bridge, editing a file in CS5 then copying the settings to similar photos so the processing is even, I don't need to "save" anything as it's all stored. If I give these RAW files to the person I've shot them for when they load up the image will they see the original or the edited one I've done in bridge?

As far as I know, RAW files cannot be edited, you will have to export them in a different format (JPG) once you've finished processing.

ah think I found my answer, there's xmp files in the folder now so I'll just make sure they're included when giving the files :)

Well I ordered the shootsac :) - Should be here next week I guess, it's been shipped either way!

Also I've borrowed a set of pocket wizards from Mark for month to have a play about with them :)

Depending on who you're giving them to, they're not going to be able to read the RAW format, xmp or no xmp. You'd be much safer giving them to people in JPEG or TIFF.

They do photography but couldn't shoot their own wedding without it being too distracting so asked me to take some shots (was a guest anyway) which I just hand over. I'm just playing with the images now to see what I can get out of them, then I can compare them to how they process them. More learning for me :)

i need a shootsac. Had an event every week for the past 5 weeks.... and am finding myself very much fed up with my backpack. Need something more accessible

Pretty much exactly why I ordered it mate.

I've got 4 lenses anyway, so having one on the camera and carrying 3 around with quick easy access and not having to juggle them - seemed to make a lot of sense to me!

I'll post some pics when it arrives :)

do so - will be interested to see it.

I think i am also going to have to get rid of the old 550d as a back up and get a 5d... I often want to cameras on me and not having 2 full framers is annoying - the change is effective focal length is not good...

Shootsac has arrived!

Very very quick write up as my dinner is minutes away from being delivered and I haven't used it yet but this is just initial impressions.

I bought the shootsac with the shoulder pad which came to £141 at the current exchange rate, this also included shipping, when it got to the UK I had to pay a further £30 to parcel force in customs charges, so £171 in total.

I bought it on July 29th and it had shipped within 24hrs, I got confirmation emails saying this.

It arrived in the UK on Thursday last week so it took just 6 days to get here, paid the charges Saturday (busy weekend so couldn't do it before hand) and choose today fro delivery was sister was off work, so 10 days all in all but to be fair 6 days to get it from the states I thought was very good and shipping was $35 anyway!

The quality of it is well above what I was expecting. When I took it out of the box my initial thought was that it was heavy, it's a bag for christ sake you're not supposed to think its heavy! but when I took it out of the packaging I soon realised why, its very very thick and made from very high grade material!

It actually feels like £140 worth of bag! the quality is much much higher than I was expecting (not that I was expecting anything bad just not anywhere near as good as this)

It instantly installs confidence, despite having it for minutes I would not hesitate to put my lenses in there straight away, the pockets are tight fitting and encompass the lens' like gloves, perfect! No movement...nothing is going to get damaged in here :)

It has 3 back pockets which are button sealable, perfect for memory cards, lens caps, flat items like that.

Anyway, some large pics for you, if anyone has questions or wants a live demonstration a facetime is not a problem!

Mainly because of the riot aftermath pictures which were uploaded at 9pm yesterday, when I only had around 6,500 total views on my account!

So, you guys fancy helping me spend some money?

I've FINALLY got the means to get started with some proper gear. Budget is open at the moment, but as a beginner I don't want to go nuts. Just an above average starter kit.

I have an Olympus E-10, its about 10 years old which I've had from new and taken many pics with it but never since had the means to upgrade. I've almost bought a second hand 40D a few times along the way but other things have taken priority.

What do I want to take pics of? Well, if I look at what I have taken this consists of animals and landscapes mostly, such as:

OK, I can only find animals. Few portraits too but just the same really and they have my ex on them.

So, what kit would you reccomend. I don't mind going second hand at all, although I have about 6 posts on TP so can't see the for sale threads there, anywhere else I can look?

I'm thinking:

Body: 60D, I'd like to dabble with video and feel I might outgrow an XXXD quickly. This feels like a logical choice for me. Is it worth getting the kit lens with one or body only?

Prime for portraits and walkabout: 50mm 1.4? Any particular brand?

Lens with a bit of reach? Really not sure what to look for here.

Tripod: Redsnapper with ball head?

Off camera flash? No idea here.

Filters and diffussers for items above? No idea here either.

Battery grip? Best to stay with the official Canon?

Any links, second hand heads up and best places to buy would be great (within the competetor rules!). If there's any packages out there worth looking at to save effort that would be awesome.

I just need a bit of hand holding to get me started. I've got the three reccomended books, just need the kit!
