Any idea what sort of money these guys are getting paid? There's a job advertised locally which I'm thinking about applying for. I've only ever done freelance work in the past so I'm not sure what the salary would be.

Its a medium-large internet provider that have advertised the job. I currently have 2-3 years PHP experience and would describe my knowledge of PHP as intermediate.

edit - I should probably add that I'm located in the Midlands :)

How much of that 2-3yrs is commercial experience? as that what makes the difference. Judging by what you've said i take it you don't have any actual commercial experience with PHP? (eg. a fully employed PHP developer). Therefore you'll struggle to get over £18k, though it really dependso on location as well :)

No commercial experience, I'm looking to get out of freelance as its becoming difficult to find the work plus I'm looking to get my own place so I could do with a more stable income.

my OH is on around the £20k mark, but he's been there 2 years (started with no PHP experience but had MCP and MCSE) and works on projects as well as PHP programming. Started on £17k p.a. I think.

Edit: I'm told to mention that he had Java experience and he started on £16k pa. :)

He's the first to go from Java to PHP that I've heard of, all the rest want to go the other way! :p

Depends what level you go in at.. PHP developers can earn up to £80k if they are in the right places. Literally just now read a job ad for a place in San Fran for $120k USD.

Freelancing you can blag as commercial experience.

Quite, I've had PHP jobs offered to me offering £50k+ (in London) but I earn more freelancing so don't take them!

I must be seriously out of touch with IT salaries , sub 20k for ANY technical job
It's all relevant to level and experience - from what I gather about your persona (ooerr) you would be significantly further "up the chain" (so to speak) more than an entry level fresh-out-of-schooling Junior, and thus receive a bundle more.

Post-grads tend to get around the £18k-£22k starting range round these 'ere parts. (Some strike it lucky and get more, some don't.)

Add to the fact every man, woman and their damn dogs want a job in IT.. you get a low salary..

Gaming industry jobs, for example, it's not unheard of for some people willing to work for as little as £8k just to 'get in'..

Uh I'm a web dev with *counts* 5 months of experience an I'm earning more than most of the estimates in this thread... (not the 100k+ ones though  )
Freelance, 'permy' or contractor?

Lucky you! Where are you working though?

I know PHP developers straight out of uni on £25k+, but they're in London, and London salaries are a lot more than most of the rest of the country :)
