I really need a way to dock the laptop (without spending a fortune). My Q27q monitor is USB-C for everything including laptop power. Makes using this setup like being in the dark ages having to connect USB, power and HDMI separately.

If you are handy, and have the tools, maybe this is a solution ? Although, in your case I guess you only be needing the USB-C cable instead of all of them ?

I am a huge fan of how OTT that is.

My added complication is that I use my mouse/keyboard for my desktop, so I would need a KVM too. So maybe I am better off with a simple USB-C to HDMI/USB 'dock' + KVM; then my routine would be to simply plug charger and USB in...

You can get handy splitters which are USB-C to one USB3 and one HDMI, with a PD input. Quite handy when combined with a USB hub so maybe would work for you as a single-plug solution?

Is a kvm not a solution?
I might be missing a step I don't use the usbc on my monitor?

I use a 4 way 4k kvm for mine

Work laptop
Surface book

Share a keyboard, mouse, monitor

My upstairs setup is awesome (but doesn't have a KVM requirement) - 1 USB-C cable from my Lenovo Q27q literally brings laptop charging power, USB (webcam/mouse/keyboard) and video output.

You're right on the downstairs setup: KVM probably the easiest setup and then I plug my charger in separately.

I get myself confused on the PD stuff. I guess they come with a power brick to force the power down and my charger is not required?

Edit: I think I get it. The charger I got boxed with my laptop is a regular barrel connector. I see the ones I have been looking at on Amazon are assuming your laptop was boxed with a USB-C charger. So you would get the simple dock and re-use your old charger. The solution is that I buy a new USB-C charger and plug that into the dock - doesn't seem too crazy. Then I am down to 1 USB for HDMI/Power/KVM; and then the KVM switches mouse and keyboard from desktop to laptop.

Edit2: Is there a barrel connector to USB-C? :D

Yeah that's what I do. My surface book has a neat 1 cable Dock so so kvm hdmi/USB plug into that.
My amp is USB too so it. Also works. From the kvm.

It's taken a lot Of effort to get it working. The kvm has been great and was super cheap
