[PIC_THREAD] Landscapes, Architecture, Seascapes

Do you keep an eye on direction, and constellation location? Like research it in advance to know?

Not really, the only thing I'd be interested in the night sky is the milky and seeing as you can't see it very well from England, I tend not to both. I usually just wait for a crystal clear, cloudless, moonless night then head out to somewhere I've scouted in the daytime for composition.

Saying that I hadn't done it in a while and completely forgot about the moon the last time I went out. It blocked out so many stars, on the plus side the landscape was nice and bright.

I have in the past used the Photographer's Ephemeris and Google Skymap on my phone to check things though, mianly sun/moonrise and set or the location of comets etc.

This is a work in progress. Oregon is famous for its forests but I have been having a lot of difficulties capturing the essence of their atmosphere. They are mostly temperate rainforests, large trees (up to 300ft), lots of moss , lichen and firns, damp, dripping, foggy and dark. Often interesting lighting but the DR is way off the scale when the sun in shining.

The below pic s to show some of the interesting lighting I want to capture, compositionally it is very poor. I have dozens of pix from this shoot and they either have pleasing compositions with poor light or nice lighting and poor composotions, the fact is you need a large tree to block the direct sun. Exposure wise I am always alternating between letting the highlights of the forest canopy blow out and getting the shadow detail of the forest floor, or lowering the exposure to emphasize the darkness of being under the canopy.
