[PIC_THREAD] Landscapes, Architecture, Seascapes

It wasn't the clearest night out, the moon didn't help either but I found a pretty good spot for star shooting the other so I thought I'd go back and try it out.

Day 78 by 42zx, on Flickr

My wife took a picture of me taking a picture of a sunset with her iPhone. I've straightened the horizon and added a very slight vignette, I thought it looked pretty good!

That is absolutely stunning. Made me look at your 365, you have some great shots there too, if you don't mind, I'll add you as a flickr contact as I'd love to see more when you post it.

Thanks Origin, thats an awesome compliment.

I'm not actually that satisfied with the photo, it was crystal clear overhead when I decided to go out, by the time I got to location it was a bit cloudy and the moon was up. Next time will be better :)

42zx, your photos are awesome it was your shots of stars that made me bite the bullet and buy a DSLR...

I doubt you'll remember but I asked A while ago what you used to take the photos.

Ended up buying a D7000 and Tokina 11mm - 16mm after looking around (I know you've upgraded now). Keep it up mate they are amazing

Thanks Acidhouse, thats awesome of you to say, I do remember because it was the first time any of my photos got noticed lol. D7000 + Tokina is still an awesome combo for stars, one of my favourite photogs was using the same combo up until recently (he got D800E). Check him out, easily puts anything I've ever done to shame -

Since I bought the 5D2 its taken me quite a while to get another lens to shoot the stars with, as most full frame equivalents of the Tokina are around £1000.

Wasted so many crystal clear nights but now that I have a lens, all we get is snow and fog! I've got some new locations scouted so I'll post some more soon hopefully.

looked at that guys pictures there, they are indeed stunning, says on one of them that he used iso 5000 for the sky, I never even considered going that high, mush give it a whirl when these snow clouds clear, altho it would appear he lives somewhere that there is ZERO light polution aswell, that would help

Yeah, he lives in Australia. I'm in quite a rural area which is a blessing and a curse for this kind of thing. Its easy to get away from light pollution, but only if you want to photograph fields!

I think you can get away with fairly high ISO shots of the stars but he'll be doing narrow aperture, low ISO shots of the foreground as well, on longer exposures, then blending them later on.

I usually drive about 10 miles away from the nearest city/town, to somewhere I've scouted in the day for some composition. There are still villages etc around though, its really hard to get away from it completely in this country.
