Or just use Lightroom's ND grad tool if shooting RAW, it's much easier and cheaper.

Yeah but if he buys the corkin starter kit he can not only start to use then for the sky but use the extra stop available from stacking them up with a tripod and getting some smooth waves or head inland for some waterfalls.

Plus I prefer filters so I'm biased
 
Well in this one you can see colour blotching in the shadows, so alternatively instead of filters he could take a couple of exposures instead that are maybe a couple of stops apart.
Regardless it's a lovely shot though...

I was woken up by it in central London at 4am, saw some amazing flashes, unfortunately I can't open any windows in this apartment - I just have a vent and the rain totally screwed any chance of shooting through the window,

You did well to get that,
 
Not sure I could be doing with a flat I couldn't open the windows in. I have nice large windows here that open inwards so I can get the tripod between them and the outside :D
