[PIC_THREAD] People, Portraits, Street

Hmm thinking back, spot would have been ideal from what you mentioned KD yeah, maybe centre weighted, bit of trial and error :-)

Yep, I pretty much always have my camera set to only 11 focus points. When you have to scroll through them, sometimes more is less imo.

I'm used to it! Pkus the zone based af groups on the 5D3 are a hugely useful feature.

I pretty much shoot a whole wedding on spot.
Rarely do I go to Matrix (evaluative), and never would I use centre weighted.

I was set up in Matrix all last night (it was just a friends party, but all indoors, and the lights were throwing some weird metering into the mix). Useful to remember that it may be better to switch over to spot at other times.
I was also relying heavily on the centre focussing point (the reviews of the 6D were true when they said the AF system is a bit weak - outer points aren't as good as centre).

Yeah it's slightly different in how metering systems work on the D800 vs 5D. In a studio setting I found that shots at 1/160s f7.1 were being shot at 1/200 on the 5D. Small differences, not huge though.

It's really useful being able to appreciate how people shoot some of these shots, often it seems far more complex than it actually is. The "Errol Flynn" look, I'd assumed was more difficult than it actually was, likewise mrk's, though they are actually so simple. (Not to detract from the ability to "see" the shot in the mind's eye and put that into practice!)

It goes to show how understanding what the camera will and won't do for you can help you realise those photos that others seem to take day in day out with apparent ease. I just need to get out there and practice with all these settings. Can someone have a word with work and get me some time off please?!

Perhaps would be nice with some of these more artistic ones if people added a little explanation as to methods, though it does generate some fascinating discussions!

This is why i shot film sometime. The image is straight out of the camera & the only thing done is dust removal and put a border on it. Shot with some crazy Ilford delta 3200 on my Pentax 645

Haven't taken pics in a while, and haven't posted in this forum for even longer! More or less using my 50/1.4 exclusively now, the 24-105 just sits in the bag so often I'm considering selling.

Please rip it apart :)

While I guess everyone is technically right in clipped blacks and whites, surely it's all subjective and just adds to the style you're looking for?

I don't think there's a 'right'way to process. There are definitely WRONG ways though :D

Photography is art, art is subjective, I agree
