Great shots Rojin, can you tell me how you manage to keep focus nailed with such low shutter speeds?

It's practice practice practice, and I still get loads of blurred shots when going for the slow shutter speeds. Plant your feet roughly perpendicular to the track, then smoothly pan with your upper body. I like to also get shots as cars head towards me and going away, as getting the side on shots all the time can get a bit boring. The side on is the easiest to get, this is where digital excels as you can click away to your hearts content!

The shutter speed you use will depend on the speed the cars are going, and in sunlight you're going to be at f16 and above so an nd filter can be a good idea ( I'm getting one this year). I've got a CPL but don't find it too useful as I don't take fixed shots where I can set one up.

You seem to have got the panning with blur thing going really well, did it require much practice? I should imagine it would be very easy to leave the car not quite sharp too.

And are these from a hill climb?

It's pretty simple to do in all honesty, it only gets trickier when you start using slow shutter speeds and shooting at an angle (I.e. not a side on pan). This is where digital is great as you can just shoot away and get instant feedback. When shooting a low shutter speed <1/60 I don't get loads of keepers, but it's all good fun.

Yes it's at Prescott Speed Hill Climb which is near Cheltenham. It's a nice day out. The La Vie en Bleu is a French themed event they run, tickets for that are currently £7 on one of the discount sites...

Ah yes that old chestnut! I've just won a Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens for Canon for £230 intended for some more Motorsport and football. Been using a friends 100-400 L f4 and found f4 to be useable in most situations.

edit: Actually it was the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. You can pick these up for around £375 second (I literally just sold mine, although it was on Ebay and it went for £430. I sold my older 7D on there as well for £695!).

Its all about the focus plane. You need a higher shutter speed if you're going to shoot when a car is approaching and want to get more of the car in focus. It's the trade off when using a slower shutter speed unfortunately. I'll see if I can dig up a more technical explanation tomorrow.
