Places to Eat in York

we're going to be expecting a food diary/blog from your trip to York, we want ratings for all your meals :D

Do you not live near Glasgow, or am I thinking of someone else entirely?

If you do then there's a Cafe Rouge there, so you could potentially try out the independent recommendations people are giving you when you're away and then go to the chains when you're at home. There's also a GBK in Edinburgh which isn't a million miles away, or there are Handmade Burgers in Glasgow which are similar.

Just a thought since people are telling you to stay away from the chains, and it does seem a shame that you could be missing out on some good places being recommended for the sake of a chain that you could go to whenever :)

I live about an hour away from Glasgow, so not too far away really. And I get what your saying. I will be avoiding most chain places. I certainly wouldn't go to somewhere like Pizza Hut/Pizza Express/Nando's/Subway while I'm there as I can get access to places like that closer to home. But there are a couple of chain places (Cafe Rouge and GBK) that I probably will go to because I know that I like them.

Remember I'm going to be there from the 13th till the 22nd! Thats a lot of different dinners and lunches. I dont need to eat at a independant place every single meal. The occasional chain place is fine IMO :p

York is full of decent places to eat and not all are on Tripadvisor etc. Use Tripadvisor to discover which places NOT to go.

There are a hundred decent cafes to go for breakfast & lunch. Surely part of the fun is finding out what its going to be like, not reading about it before you get there. Get out and walk around the place. I've worked here for over 10 years and I still find small places to eat that I've never seen before.

If you're a critic of sorts or an amateur food blogger then I can appreciate using the internet to filter out the chaff, its a good idea and saves you time/money but just as a tourist? Really?

I can't actually believe people leave reviews for Chains - what is the point, good or bad. Unless someone finds a rotting blue whale in their chicken salad it won't make the slightest bit of difference as to who goes and who doesn't.

When was the last time you left a review on any site for something that was 'okay'?

In today's climate its the indie places that need our support, you're lucky in that you're going to a small city, that for the majority of places, embraces local produce and supports local suppliers.

I fully intend to explore the city and find places that have not been mentioned here for eating. But this thread does give me some ideas for places to look out for and places to stay away from. And no I'm not a critic or blogger. Just a hungry tourist :D

Can anyone recommend Nineteen or The Biltmore Bar & Grill? Or shall I avoid them?

Biltmore is good very good, service is hit and miss but the food is very good.

Nineteen i haven't been to myself but has a good reputation.

If it is one of the above and you can deal with slow service Biltmore gets my vote

Still looking for more places to go. Anyone know if Russells is any good? I've walked past it numerous times, but never been inside. Their menu isn't anything amazing to look at, but I see they do a carvery service. Wondered if it was worth a go or not?

Or the Barbakan cafe/deli? That looks pretty interesting. Any good? :)

Has anyone mentioned Hotel du Vin?

Nobody has mentioned that one before. Looks interesting. I'd be curious to try the caviar. Never actually tried that before, or been to a resteraunt that even served it.

Pity about Russell's. There menu was a bit boring looking anyway, but I thought maybe the carvery might have made up for it.

The Biltmore is excellent, never heard of Nineteen. Sounds like it may have started up since I left uni, which makes me feel old :(

I'm not sure about the Barbican for a carvery, but if you're after a roast there is nowhere better than Evil Eye.

El Gaucho's is worth a look - good steak!

Looks good. I'll add it to the list. At this rate I'm gonna end up with more places to go than I'll have time to actually go to :D

Speaking of which. Can anyone recommend Meltons or The Living Room?

EDIT: Or Bobo Lobo? That looks like another good cocktail bar that also does food :D

Meltons used to be good not so anymore , Living Room is always busy si you have to assume its good, Bobo Lobo is good for drinks and again is always busy for food but never personally eaten there.

Yosushi is OK , the best mainstream sushi you UK according to my Wife, I don't eat the stuff.

however she always recommends

For Sushi all made on site and the other food is lovely as well , in fact went there last night :D

However I must warn you , the deco is nothing to write home about , the plastic food models look stupid and worrying! however the food is cheap cheap and it is top quality as you can see by the reviews.

Just keep in mind its not the place you would go for a "special night".

Hope that comes across right , its worth going definitely just not for say a wedding anniversary :p
