Places to Eat in York

Living Room is, in my opinion, one of the best chains for food, but it's still a chain - you've got enough good independent places on your list!

Oh if you're looking for Asian food, specifically Japanese you could try Indochine. They don't seem to have a website but there's a review of it here http://theseareafewofmyfavouritethings.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/16-indochine-york/ It's not quite as good as it used to be, but it's still much better than many asian restaurants.

Also just around the corner from there on the river is the King's Arms A.K.A. "the pub that floods" which is certainly worth a visit for a cheap Samuel Smith's pint and great atmosphere!

I dont really go to pubs as a rule, unless they serve good food, since I'm not much of a drinker. But I'll keep my eyes open for Indochine.

I hesitate to ask this, but does anyone know if Jamies Italian is any good? I didn't even know Jamie Oliver had a resteraunt in York.

That place has closed down, the food was full of MSG , its been replaced by an equally bad dim sum place run by a guy who through days runs a laundrette or something like.

Jamies Italian is available in York but I wouldn't :p I've been to the one in York and in Oxford (the original IIRC) and both have been poor. Best thing about them is the bread says it all really :p

Obviously all of this advice is my opinion which not everyone will agree with or I may of just had a bad meal there.

For a foodies place this has a good reputation although I have never been myself http://www.jbakers.co.uk/

Also can't remember if I have mentioned it but if you want Italian Delrios is the place to be opposite a a curry house and very near Old Siam which is a great thai place:)

Hope you get back to what you like and disliked on this list would be interesting to hear.

When are you going again ?

Yeah I thought as much. I was very dubious about the place, but thought I'd double check. I go to York on the 13th. Not long now :)

^ Thank you :)

Hmmm. I better think about booking up a table somewhere for my first dinner on Monday. By the time I get into the hotel and unpacked, I probably wont be in the mood for a lot of walking around. Maybe I'll give The Olive Tree a call and see if I can get a table reserved. The lobster ravioli on their menu sounds goooooood :)

EDIT: Table at The Olive Tree has been booked for Monday evening. Thats one dinner sorted anyway :D

Ow that's a shame. Last time we went it certainly had new ownership and wasn't as good as in 2008/2009 but at that time it really was amazing. Loads of dishes, tapas style from all over SE and E asia.

BTW what asian restaurant doesn't make food laced with msg?!

BTWBTW nothing wrong with a laundrette. Used to go to a pretty jokes electro night at the Willow called Chinese Laundry :D

.

The pub is worth a visit just to look at the photos on the wall and the marks on the bar where the river comes to some years even if you don't drink anything :)

Arrived @ Rustique for bang on 12:30 and had a pleasant chat with a French waiter. Ordered an ok-ish bottle of Bordeaux (Marquis de la Grange) for £20 and off we went.

I ordered from the set-menu, while my friend ordered from the A la Carte.

For starters I had Pate, which was not as smooth as it perhaps should have been, but the flavour was there. Rustic it certainly was, and you would have been pleased to have been served it at a friends dinner party, but perhaps not massively so when paying for it in a restaurant.

Regardless, I ate it all, so it couldn't have been that bad. For main course I ordered Steak Frites, which was fine. Cooked as requested, although the sauce tasted a bit odd, so most of that was left (thank god I requested it on the side!). The steak was of a fair quality.

My friend had French Onion Soup followed by Fillet Steak. His Fillet was requested medium-rare, but was severley undercooked and served Blue, but he wasn't concerned. Blue Cheese sauce had decent flavour, and frites were good.

I would certainly return for the set menu, as for £13 for two courses on a Saturday lunchtime, I felt it was dcecent value. I should add it was absolutely rammed, and they advised over the phone that they wanted the table back at 2pm, which I was fine with. They didn't mention this on the day, and food was quick at coming out.

Food 7/10 (for York here, not comparing to London etc)
Value 7/10 (for 2 course set menu)
Service 7/10
