Depends really. I've been playing it for 2 years now so i could probably do it in an hour. If you're new to the game though, it could take you a little longer! It depends on whether you are any good at FPS games and can adapt to the strange engine quickly.
 
omg, back when I PAYED to play this (still can't beleave that I DID THAT!) it was ok, but got pants once SOE started whoreing it up!
wonder if anythings changed.
 
Ity was an awesome game when it came out and before they completely fubar'd the physics, never had so much fun than in the days driving the deliverer around and having it do barrel rools off hillocks :D
 
Well i'm in. It's Free and i like free.
Am getting about 215kb speedwise (10% done as i post) so i will give it a try in the morning. Something new to get my teeth into on a Sunday between the Motor/bike racing.
What tips have you for a noob to this then. Who shall i join, links to good sites etc. Odviously i googled but there was a truck load of sites and it's to late for sifting.

Sorry everyone, but PlanetSide is now dead. Hardly anyone plays it, hence why they are trying to give it away free. The reason they don't play it is because SOE are ***** and can't really do anything right. It really is not even worth the hard drive space anymore.
 
As to who you play :

New Conglomerate : heavily armoured vehicles, slow, hard hitting guns.

Terran Republic : slightly lighter more maneuverable vehicles than the NC, high rate of fire guns that do less damage per hit.

Vanu Sovereignty : Energy weapons, hover vehicles - the futuristic option.

They all play differently. Played the NC most, but really always liked the VC the best. Their maxes (armoured battle suits) are the most fun.
 
Yeah they have snipers. It's certification based rather than choosing a class. With every Battle Rank you go up, you gain an extra cert point. Sniping cert requires 3 certs. You start with several points anyway so you can choose what you want to do.

There are different armour classes aswell that require cert points. Agile is free and Reinforced Agile (RExo) is another 3 points. When i'm sniping i go with Boltdriver and Pulsar (or Empire Specific Medium Assault weapon. NC: Gauss. TR: Cycler) while wearing RExo. Always worked a dream for me. :)
 
Daily chores done and game fully loaded up.
Account started etc and i am just going in for the first time.
Will let you know what i think later after a full test drive.
 
I'd come and help you ingame but unfortunately my PC is down at the moment and this spare one has no chance of running it. ;)

EDIT: If you need a better link to get the game, use this. This is the basic launchpad and you will download all the files through this. Better as you can stop it and it will save all the files that you have downloaded.

I remember the very first time I played this game. I loaded at a base which was under heavy attack, our soldiers flooding the hallways trying to get outside into the carnage, great fun over teamspeak:

Me: Where are you mate?
my friend: Im just in the hallways on my way out
me: ahh Im right behind you, get ready to run like hell!
my friend: okay im at the door, loads of fire coming towards us.
me: RUN RUN RUN!!

It was just total utter mayhem, anyway at that time I wouldnt have considered subscribing to any MMOs, that was on a trial, and my computer wasnt good enough anyway, low fps and low RAM ment it was choppy as hell.

Anyway, my download last night failed so Im gonna redownload now, what server are we all choosing?

And what team has the best rifle (Accurite and does good damage)?
 
Well i am actually playing.
Having said that i don't know where what how or anything. :D
Just 3 servers came up for me and the Euro has a ping of less than 30 so that's the one for me.
It loaded installed and registered sweetly. Runs like a dream so no probs there.
In game i am up to level 3 or whatever its called and god knows how i did that either. Just from wandering about a bit i think.
I have been killed 3 times by some freaky electrical business that flys down the corridors i am trying to exit from. Its fun its free can't say no more than that at the moment as i am noob of noob city from noob world in a noob universe picking his noob bum. :p
My ingame name is malc30 so no surprises there then. Anyone who wants to kill me can for free.
I am going back in as the total no nothing feeling i get whilst being shot by futuristic weapons is adding to the fun.

As for other people playing it there was loads of people on absolutely loads. All sorts of weird and wonderful vehicles steaming about. Massive robots, force fields, fly type vehicles.
Of course when i type in i am noob help me everybody rushed to console and quickly clued me up. NO. :p
They just let me wander about getting shot at till i found the enemy then he fried me with his electrical business. :( :p
 
balls ,its one of those games thats very fussy about the keyboard and mouse control binds , it wont let me have a mouse button as move foward ,every time i set it then move to bind the KB buttons it clears the previous mouse binds :(
 
My advise is to go Werner, but that is because i want to see more people on there. :P I'm a little biased!

Nieldo, it's quite difficult to say which is the best weapon really. I could spurt out several pages of statistics about damage degradation and Cone of Fire bloom but i doubt i would achieve much. I would say the Rifles (assuming you are talking about Medium Assault here) are all very balanced. In terms of Heavy Assault though, things get a little, tricky. :) There is much debate over the balance of the Heavy Assault category. Here's my take on it:

HA is balanced IMO, it just requires different styles of players to make the weapons work.
Vanu Sovereignty (Lasher) - Best to work in smaller teams of 2/3 people. It has slow moving orbs that do medium/high damage. They also do a small amount of splash damage so you *can* technically get people around corners. But it isn't that useful.
New Conglomerate (JackHammer) - Short range, high powered shotgun. Can kill an enemy in near 3/4 shots provided you have a good close quarter combat aim.
Terran Republic (MCG) - Claimed to be the weakest HA, i disagree. It definately requires the most experience to use and a good overall aim and control of burst fire. It has a high rate of fire with pretty low damage. It has the slowest Time to Kill (TTK) yet i firmly believe that it's slight range advantage over the other 2 HA makes up for this.

Malc30, I'm glad you seem to be enjoying it! Unfortunately you are joining a very experienced playerbase that have formed their own little tight groups of friends. It makes this game very n00b unfriendly. What empire did you join? I might be able to suggest some helpful players and outfits to give you a hand.
