A bank holiday was meant to allow workers to have a day of on that day and provide a longer weeked. Just like sunday used to. If you have to work on a bank holiday then that bank holiday isnt recognised for what it is.
Many people have worked on bank holidays always. On the railways or coaches, at resorts, hotels, pubs etc. It was recognised as a bank holiday with time in lieu or double time paid.

Now people want to shop 24/7 more places are open. Gone are Sundays, half day closing on a Wednesday and bank holidays. Personally I would be fine with five and a half day opening every week between 7am and 6pm but that is supposed progress.

I did get a long weekend every sixth week when I worked on sites away from home. At one time there was one bank holiday in May, one in August and Boxing Day only. New year and May day came later.

not much difference between the royal family and the kardashians really accept one took power by force of their followers, literally

When I was younger and unemployed I hated bank holidays and sundays as it meant those lazy workers couldnt be bothered to get up and open shops.

Thanks god for 24/7 shopping. Although none of my 24hr supermarkets have gone back to 24hrs.

If you don't care about something you don't spend your time talking about it. Not really hard to understand, guess it is for you.
Spend time talking about it? Yea because 20 seconds to type a post is such a long time. Regardless I can talk about whatever I want, even if I don't care about it. And what on Earth does it have to do with you. Jeez some people really are thick.

Sorry was just posting my opinion. Thought I was on a Forum.

I grew up in a backwards village out in the sticks, as a kid at the time I can remember the whole village getting together for a village party back in the 1977 silver jubilee, you could not move for bunting. But what I remember most vividly was the first time I had tasted a barbequed lamp chop and fruit punch in the big marquee that had been setup for the party. So, not going to go to or have any events this time of course, but I think I may just recreate the barbequed lamb chop and punch thing for myself.

I still have memories of when most people did give a damn. I recall street parties for the silver jubilee and people dressing up. As a 7 year old, I got caught up in it and was in fancy dress and won. As a grown up, I could not care less. Back then, the royals were seen as something else, beyond criticism. Their reputation has taken quite a battering over the last 40 years and I think most people really could not care less. I'd rather the scroungers were made to live on the dole, certainly they need to have their status removed and we need to stop paying for them. I'll take a couple of days off work though, because who wouldn't?

I quite like the Royals, other than the nonces obvs, the Queen in particular is a legend. While a street party makes me shudder in horror(mingling with the neighbours....no ta), an excuse for a private party.........yes please.

We got bunting and union jack serviettes! Proper patriots us.

I remember drinking periodically in a little social club about 20 years ago, and at the end of the evening just after last orders, they would play the national anthem and everyone was expected to stand for it. The regular eyes scanned the room for anyone not standing or acting generally with the utmost respect for Her Majesty, with a ban awaiting anyone who didn't meet the standard.

A couple of the medal polishers in this thread have took me back those 20 years. :D

The number of customers that asked our opening hours - there's a bloody sign! The hours are the same. Customers ask why we aren't reducing hours. Answer is, the govt done nothing with reducing hours for shops, so retailers are doing nothing too.

We are now having a whole family BBQ for this. One of those "Grin and bear it and it'll be over soon" jobs. That means I have to see them all twice this year - hell.
