Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

7 miles last night uploaded. Watch has been sitting on the dining room table overnight, still not touched the charger and this morning the battery is showing 50%... Not being funny, but even if this is mis-reading and it all of a sudden dies a death, the battery life is incredible compared to any other Garmin so far.

39 miles/4.5 hours onto the 5th day of not touching the charger!

Kinda puts the estimate at around 10hours then which I think is correct for the 620.

The latest version of the Garmin Connect application has tabs for the new features; it now shows steps and sleep, for example.

None of the extra tabs are populated for me as my device doesn't record steps or sleep. Hopefully they'll allow linking to FitBit, as I have no interest in their VivoFit device.

I'm also pleased to be able to report that the Android version of the Garmin Connect application now works with the Forerunner 620 via bluetooth, at least on my Z1 Compact :)

I love it when its time for new running shoes. Just christened my new gel cumulus 15's with a 10 miler :)

I didn't manage to do a sub 2 hour run at today's Old Deer Park half marathon, but I did at least get this nice medal;

The course was nice. Flat, relatively smooth surfaces and as luck would have it, no flooding. According to my Garmin the race was only 12.94 miles long, which is a bit weird;

Yes, it took me ages. It took me the best part of an hour to find my rhythm, and then my digestive system decided it wanted to play up, so I had to hold back. I'm doing another half marathon in five weeks, hopefully I'll be better prepared for that one. Even so, it was a good morning and I'm glad I did it :)

Going to try and get back into running again after a year and a bit off.... I work 6 days a week and am out at 0730 and not back till around 2000 so time is scarce but I need to do it.... Getting a bit hefty these days :(

1 mile start with double for LSR's and just build it back from there.

Any recommendations for a good cheap small mp3 player for running? I have a HTC one and thought about strapping it to my arm but the thing is mssive and would worry if i got caught in a rain shower

What do people generally use? not a fan of ipods either, hate having to use itunes so really looking for something that would support drag and drop

Thanks

Si

I tend to use my iphone but if you want something small and cheap I think the sandisk sansa clip series are generally well thought of and not too expensive. I bought my dad one to use in the gym and he seems pretty happy with it. Not massive capacities but I think it has a card slot

I used to run with a Sandisk Sansa Clip, but I could never find a pair of headphones that worked for me. I recently got myself one of the Sony waterproof mp3 players (the 4GB model - NWZ-W273) for running with, and I've found the lack of cables to be beneficial to my running. I no longer have to worry about the headphone cable getting snagged when I turn my head to look for traffic when crossing the road, for example.

I use a Sandisk Sansa Clip with some Sennheiser neckband earphones - perfect combo for me. Think I got the sandisk for around £25, it's got a micro-sd slot so I've got 8gb in mine at the moment. It clips onto my shorts nicely, don't even notice it's there.

How do you find this for comfort particularly in terms of it's weight? And is the battery life decent like most of the other stuff Sony make?

I've always used Sony MP3 players and the battery life is always decent on them and they charge quickly.

In terms of weight, you won't notice any difference over standard headphones as they weigh only 30g. I find them to be comfortable, but I've always liked earphones that go in the ear rather than around them. Because they're designed for swimming they form a tight seal inside your ear - this is probably not ideal if you want to be able to hear traffic coming, but it does mean that you don't have to crank up the volume in order to hear your music.

The quoted battery life is 8 hours, however I tend to recharge it after every third run, so I don't know how accurate that is. It features rapid charging, so apparently three minutes of charging will get you an hour of playback if you're in a hurry and forgot to charge it.

Think I am going to be picking up a pair of these as a birthday gift to myself. Been doing a lot more running but keen on picking up swimming to eventually move towards tri

Just preordered one of these:

** No referral links **

Looks like a really good bit of wearable tech. I started getting in to running last year (before I hurt my knee) and really love using RunKeeper etc. as I like looking in to the data and understanding where I can improve etc. This can have the added benefit of improving my running form as well as giving me a whole load of new data points. Its 50% off at the moment so have put a preorder in.

Think i will get my girlfriend one for her birthday. She got me the 310xt for my christmas as they were too hard to get a hold off around about then.
I love my 310xt but it is a bit big for her dainty wrists
