Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

If you want to see somebody else's stats, I've made my morning run public; http://connect.garmin.com/activity/447107625.

I paid £286.79 for mine, but then I sold my Forerunner 210 for £100 so the upgrade cost me £186. I suppose it doesn't do anything that the Forerunner 210 didn't do, but the fact that it's so much nicer to use makes it worthwhile in my view. The wireless syncing is a great feature, and I love the fact that it gets a satellite lock so quickly.

Did you configure your heart rate zones when you set up the watch? If you don't, it'll stay at the default which is probably going to be wrong for you.

Yeah I hope to get maybe around £100 for my 405CX which will then equate to me having spent £180 on it only. Much more acceptable haha.

Ahh nice one man, good comparison wise to see. Biggest thing I notice is the ground contact time chart for your run and then mine, it's vastly different, I don't really understand it. The colour scheme makes sense but my scatter seem in a line with yours all over the place, it's a bit strange in graph form this way.

HR zones, nah have not configured them. Maybe something I should do. Someone from my team checked out that run and on his easy runs say 7minute miling he is around 170bpm but we know his HR is a bit higher than mines. This is first time I have checked mines in a very long time so I will set them up as it's worth doing for future for peace of mind at least. 80-85% (which it assumed I was at last night) I would expect to be around 5:45 minute per mile tempo pace. I'll dial it all in and see how accurate my stab in the dark is! :)

Now, I have a VGC Garmin 405CX with HRM, ANT stick, charger and USB cable for sale ;) I'd rather sell outwith eBay to a good home so if anyone wants pics, details etc, feel free to give me a shout. Otherwise I'll need to go to eBay and the timewasters that live there!

Interested in the 405cx, will drop you a pm and maybe you can make a thread in the sale forum

I was tempted with a 620 a little while back but the deals on the 310xt were too good to pass up - lovely device and great battery life

Think it cost about 140 or so with hrm

Didn't even realise there was a for sale forum but it's because it is not visible to me after I just read the mental criteria you need to meet to use it! I won't be able to sell on here any time soon, that's for sure... :rolleyes:

Send me a PM through the trust thingy, we can sort something out. Even if I need to agree a price with you and put it on eBay or something like that for you can sort it out.

often :( like today

but I draw the line when I feel cold and/or shivery

often if stuffed up etc (like I am atm) I feel better after a running session

depends on the session too - if efforts it takes my mind off my cold, if a long steady run - less so :(

Well it is only going to be a slow 5k but it's just a little more than just feeling stuffy. :(

Really want to run but I just don't know if it's worth it really. Just been getting my motivation back as well after quite a bit of time away from it all.

I was borderline, a couple of symptoms below the neck but nothing that wasn't getting better.

Ran just under 4 miles in just over half an hour. Now actually feel much better than I did before I went. :)

Now lets see what tomorrow brings.....

How many people here run when under the weather and where do you draw the line?

A small head cold, sure. A fever or stomach bug, no. Last year I accidently ran a few miles with a fever and food poisoning, made me an awful lot worse.

I figure it is better to get better as quickly as possible and then return to running rather than delaying your recovery.

Anyone else got the new Garmin Connect yet? I got excited last night, the home page (not logged in) is refreshed to the new UI, but after logging in it takes me to the old interface. Booo!

This morning I got a popup message though about the incoming changes so hoping it happens for my account ASAP. Post here if/when you get the new interface, so I can rage at you getting it before me! :P

Also, 620 is awesome. WiFi works a treat, I stop the watch in my driveway and by the time I have opened my gate and closed it, the activity has already been transferred over WiFi and up to Garmin Connect. GPS accuracy has remained spot on for every run and if I hit start on the watch as I am walking through the living room to the kitchen and out the door, the thing already has found satellites whilst I am in the house and is good to go the second I step outside. Very happy with it!

Hmm interesting. How much did you get the 620 for and any idea on battery life for it?

I have the 310XT as it lasts 20hrs (supposedly) but it still takes a couple of mins of me standing outside to get a satellite lock. Bit annoying especially when its cold or just starting to rain :)

It was £359 but I got a discount and had a £50 voucher, so it cost me £260. I'll sell my 405CX for approx £100 so all in all the 620 should cost me around £160-£180.

Battery life seems real good:
Monday = 8 miles.
Tuesday = 4 miles AM, 8 miles PM
Wednesday = 7 miles
Thursday = 4 miles AM

It's done all that, not seen charger since Monday @ 5pm. And the wee battery bar is barely under full, it's 1 notch down, 90% I would say.

I stick my 310XT out the front door to "beam up" whilst putting my running shoes on - minimises time spent prancing around in the cold at this time of year.

That's interesting, xdcx; mine is down to about 30% battery after running for about four hours.

I am finding it too good to be true. I reckon it's saying it has 85/90% left but will all of a sudden plunge to 20% in the space of a short run. I'm doing easy 6/7 at 5pm will see what Mr Battery thinks of himself after that run/upload.

I tried that with my 210, but the rigid strap meant that it wouldn't lay flat, and so I couldn't get it to achieve a satellite lock. The glacial locking times on the 210 was by far the worst aspect of it - if it locked as quickly as the 620 I wouldn't have felt the need to upgrade.

Yup, I may start to do that too :) It's very tempting to get a new one but I can't really fault my 310XT. It'd be nice to have the satellite pre-loading but I can't really justify a few hundred for it.

They do look very nice watches thoguh :)

7 miles last night uploaded. Watch has been sitting on the dining room table overnight, still not touched the charger and this morning the battery is showing 50%... Not being funny, but even if this is mis-reading and it all of a sudden dies a death, the battery life is incredible compared to any other Garmin so far.

39 miles/4.5 hours onto the 5th day of not touching the charger!
