Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Got out on an 8.5m test run and everything feels solid, no pain or anything on my hip. 73miles for the week and i feel great. So I've decided to run my marathon on the 1st, will just be conservative with time and be prepared to stop if any hip pain returns.

Today I went for a run. My first since a winter 2014 attempt at day one of Couch 2 5K. I didn't get any further than that - didn't enjoy it one little bit.

Today's run was at lunchtime - 2.4 miles, with a bit of walking I guess at the 1.2 miles for what looks to be 0.2 miles and ran the final mile.

I haven't run attempted to run "properly" since I was 14. Now 35. I get tired running about 300m normally, if I'm late for something... this wasn't much faster than a brisk walking pace, more of a slow jog, which is probably why I could keep going. Or maybe cycling made me fitter.

The most surprising thing was that I actually enjoyed it - but was with a couple of workmates... so could be the social aspect that made it bearable.

May go out for another little jaunt on Thursday and see if I can run the whole way.

Glad you enjoyed the run! Its very understandable why people don't like it, i now some people that can only run socially otherwise they hate it.

I've started and stopped running many times over the last 10 years. I would normally run for about 6 weeks and then get bored, can't be bothered walking up early to run in the cold or rain etc. But 18 months I started running with aim of loosing weight, getting outside (I work form home so tended to be inside 5-6 days at a time!), and getting fitter. I was a little more motivated this time round, but as I started to wane (took couple of months off over winter) I was determined not to go back to my old way so started with a goal, initially a half marathon.

With the goal in mind my attitude changed like a light switch and soon I was having to restrain myself form running too much too soon.

Now I'm kind of addicted, but I still have a love-hate relationship with running. There are days when it is the greatest feeling ever and I just get antsy waiting inside before i can go out an run. there are days when I only went out because I have a marathon signed up for. Some days are just a drudgery, other days are fantastic watching the world go by.

My advice is to set yourself a simple goal to work towards. If you enjoy running with others then trying to arrange that.

I took an active recovery day ysterday, s2250yd swim and then 40 minutes of core streght and leg weights.

This morning was an easy aerobic:
8.7mi, 1:13:01 8:22min/mile, HR 152

Pacing and HR are much closer to what I had pre-injury, despite the elevated temperatures.

My goal is to be able to run 5k non-stop. May do it with the aid of C25K again, but for now the current thing is to run tuesday and thursday with those two... but one has a half marathon next month so can't stop to go at my pace... . May also go out on a weekend, legs permitting.

Legs are still pretty shot from sunday :p Tried an easy bike ride yesterday, just going to foam roll today. In terms of overall goals for the year, bike wise I wouldn't mind doing this:

Which has been on my radar for a couple of years now, and run wise, I think I could probably fit in either Not the Rio Marathon or the Isle of Man Marathon. Depending on travel and such, but I'm pretty sure I'll have my driving license by then... hmm. Accommodation in London would probably be pretty expensive.

Perfect morning for a run, cool, sunny and a gentle breeze.
10.3mi, 1:27:01, 8:22/mi HR 154, 450ft

Legs a little tired after some leg strengthening exercises last night but feeling good overall.

love the weather atm - mixture of sun but not too hot :)

third run of the week today - up to 26 miles for the week so far - not bad - yesterday was a club run/run plus to and from home to club. Our club run was 12x600m ! - hard work - was surprised (as wasn't taking any notice during run) - that over the 11 miles averaged 7'04 was pleased with that

todays lunchtime run was a bit of an explore looking for summer routes - averaged a slightly slower 9 min miles :)

decided to enter my first Marathon in October (hoping to aim for 3'30) - have a training partner lined up for some longer runs 3 months before - but getting some miles in now to make life then a bit easier :)

had an active recovery day yesterday, some good swimming, leg strengthening and then a physio appointment. Turns out my right ankle is very inflexible and tight, which means it doesn't bend appropriately and so my hip rotates to compensate and allow the leg to come forwards. With the leg rotated my foot is rotated when leaving the ground and that is increasing stress on hip abductors. Things loosened up a little but I am going to have to keep working on it.

Did a dress rehearsal medium long run this morning, felt much stronger and faster despite the slight hangover and sweltering temperatures!

12.6mi, 1:41:36, 8:03/mi, 600ft, AVR 158.

Heart rate was high but it was really hot and I'm not acclimatized for the heat yet. Hopefully race day will be a little cooler. Not long to go now. Another rest day tomorrow (that will make 3 this week, lots of recovery going on I hope). Then just some short easy runs to keep the legs turning over through the week. main priority will be lots of stretching, foam roller, and loosening up tight ham strings and ankles.

I don't know whether anyone else was watching the London Marathon today but it was fantastic, Jemima Sumgong winning the women's race after a big fall which also took out the pre-race favourite. Eluid Kipchoge was amazing, smashed the course record and came damn close to breaking the World record, he might even have done it if he'd realised early enough how close he was. Callum Hawkins also did brilliantly in the men's race to get 8th place, a big new PB and guaranteed selection for the Olympics. I think this is the first time I've ever watched it right the way through and I'm very happy I did.

In terms of my training I went for a 20 mile run yesterday, partly so I could watch the Marathon today without worrying about it. Tiring as would be expected but it's more about getting some distance in for me. I'm aiming for another couple of longer runs before I taper down and hopefully I'll be as ready as I can be.
