Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

it was indeed a fantastic London Marathon :) really really enjoyed that

well done on the 20 miler yesterday semi-pro

I've upped my miles last few months - and even on tired legs at Park-run yesterday I managed a PB - finally as last one was 2 years ago !

Official time was 19'07 but I think they got the top 15 positions against times wrong (they may correct - the times are out of sync when you look at finish photos) - my Garmin said 19'00'91 - SOOO close to my goal for 2016 of sub 19 - but there is always next time

Cheers and congratulations on the PB, hopefully they manage to sort out the times but even if it stands you know you've got it in you for an even better result.

So, I ran my first half marathon yesterday in Southampton. It was a really good morning, weather was perfect, and the support from the crowd's was great.

I finished faster than expected in 1:41:35 @4:48/km average HR of 166bpm thanks to all that gave me advice given on here!

I felt good at the end and could have gone further, which means I could probably go a bit faster. I can aim for sub 1:40 next time :)

Hamstrings are a bit sore this morning but otherwise good. Sprint Triathlon next week, then a 10km the week after that.

Congrats neilw, good time and looks like you held a very steady pace.

Was very impressed when I saw Tim Peake was doing that and completed it. I can't image the differences in strain compared to doing it in gravity. It does say it held him for 75% body weight but all of that on the shoulders and hips can't be nice nor the rubbing from the harness.

Congrats neilw, very fast time for a first HM!

Saturday I took a rest day, sunday I did an easy 8.5miles, swimming this morning, will do some easy 4-6m tomorrow, maybe with some stride. Mostly just letting the body recover, hydrate, sleep, stretch and focus mentally.

Taper tantrums set in Saturday a, generally feeling heavy legged, lethargic and weir phantom pains now and then. Felt he same before my last marathon and doing some strides helepd give confidence that my legs weren't actually turning into concrete.

First run at the weekend, 1.7 miles in 15:01 (was aiming for 2 but under estimated how far from home 1 mile was) :o Felt fairly comfortable except for my old ankle injury being noticeable straight away as expected. Got some pretty interesting hip flexor type aches now!

Argh, I've been training for a half marathon at the start of July. Everything has been going OK and I've got my long runs up to 9miles. I did one last Friday and all was fine, was flagging a bit towards the end but generally OK. I had the weekend off and last night I went for a quick two mile run with the dog. About halfway round my right calf just seemed to tighten up and hurt.. Stupidly I carried on, got home and I was in agony. Today it feels as though the inside of my right calf just above the ankle bone is bruised and it hurts to touch. I'm hoping it's just a temporary thing and I can get back on it on Friday otherwise I'm going to be struggling come July!

sorry about that, unfortunately running injuries are pretty common, just check the last pages of this thread!

RICE and then rest. If it continues to be slightly bothersome then drop runs in exchange for cross-training but try to gauge whether the cross training is making it worse. After stretching my hip flexor I fund swimming and cycling to make things a little better and I could still do some exercise.

I did a 5.2 mile easy run this morning, taper is in full swing so my legs felt like concrete. Did some strides at the end just to remind myself that the legs will turn quick if need be!

Haha yeh, it's just annoyed me more than anything as I very rarely seem to get injured and the time I do, I'm actually training towards something instead of just doing it for fun! I did some weight work last night and that didn't seem to make it hurt and I'll go climbing tonight so fingers crossed it'll be OK!

New PB of 42:08 for 9.9K because I apparently couldn't manage the last .1! Oh well, always next time.

With being a little ill last few weeks I was feeling like I was getting slower so as I'm mostly better I pushed myself in today's lunch run to get that 10k time down. If only I could have made the distance lol.

3:13:34. Super happy with time. Narrowly missed a stay in the medical tent,so cold at the end. Driving rain a howling g wind forced a faster pace just to avoid hypothermia. Right leg stayed strong, leg knee hurt from mile 10 otherwise I could have probably knocked another 1-2 minutes off.

Very happy with train g results. Next time I am going to concentrate on lots of leg strengthening. I had the fitness to go faster but left leg was just not happy so I kept back a little.

That's a really good time, well done on that. Hope that you don't suffer too much over the next few days and that you've managed to get properly warmed up.

I did 23 miles earlier today which was pretty hard going, the week was a bit disrupted so ended up doing 11 miles on Friday and would have liked a bit more recovery time before my long run but not feeling too bad just now. I do quite like having the stats to hand so I can see that on this training run the distance climbed was half a Munro. I think probably one more longish run then taper down for the marathon at the end of May.

Took this week of terrible weather as an opportunity to do some rest, recovery and core work. Think I needed it, and I'm looking forward to getting back into it. Think I'm going to adjust my training a little and tentatively target the Isle of Man Marathon, if I can pass my driving test before then :p See how I feel in a couple of weeks when I can scrap some money together for the entry fee.

After doing effectively zero running since last years Great North Run, I've piled on the pounds and in general feel a little rubbish. As such, a couple of weeks ago I decided to get back running and try and get the fitness back up a little.

Slowly building up the miles, pleased to run 5.5 miles on Friday without too much hassle. The intent is to get back up to half marathon distance and slowly work on pace. I've done the GNR twice now and was slower the second time round, so ultimately my goal is to get to be sub 2 hour half marathon as I feel I have unfinished business!

The good news is, I forgot how much I missed running, so after the initial slug to get myself out on the road, I'm really enjoying it, if finding it a little tricky to find the time with work and family commitments.

Reading peoples progress in this thread is really inspiring, so i'll try and keep you updated with home I'm progessing
