Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Consider it done!

The IM will totally depend on how much I can progress my swimming while still getting to to ride.

That is a good run, I love runs int he 15-16m range. Anything over about 13m I take a hydration belt and a gel pack or 2 which i don't always take but it is useful training to get your body used to consuming gels. My Neighbor never took any gels in training, he ran with a club that organized weekend long runs and put how some haribo, coke and fruit pieces which is all great until you run marathon and drink poweraid and consume gels. He felt so sick and got very dehydrated. This time round he is training a lot consuming fluids and sugar sources, trying to find out what he can stomach.

I had gels with me and usually take them if I plan on 13 or more, just had not factored the heat. Will have to look at a belt so I can take a drink with me for the summer.

Good run yesterday, 7.1 miles @8:09 and 157bpm which surprised me as again the heat was getting to me. Planning on a 5-6 tonight with some intervals in there then going to run to work tomorrow morning to give another 12, if I have time I'll extend that out a little.

Shamrock, that's really impressive and I love the idea of that style event!

Nice 13.5 into work today 7:49/mi 157bpm. Aside from a climb out of my area it's mostly downhill, realised about a mile from the office I got the distance wrong so carried on into town and back out to add the extra 3.5

I'm feeling so good I'm really really tempted to run the 10miles home....it is a nice day after all!

Ha! Well I was all set for it, my wife was coming to pick up my work stuff as I'm on call at the weekend but sadly her "fixed" car was not so fixed and she got stuck at the shops unable to start it so had to go deal with that.

Well, guess I'll have to make up for it tomorrow and Sunday!

Didn't get out yesterday as planned as friend was over checking the car out. Made up for it today with 17.6 miles, 8:03/mi @159bpm with 860ft of climbing.

Was so glad I picked up a hydration belt, though still finished those off by about mile 15. Felt pretty good all considered, legs were tired but was still able to keep my pace up till the end.

Good running and I hope the car is now ok.

Last weekend wasn't great for running for me, my slowest Parkrun in probably a year at 21:30 and then my last long run before tapering to the Edinburgh Marathon at the end of this month. The long run was pretty hard, I'd initially planned to do around 20 miles but a combination of a lack of sleep and temperatures of around 25 degrees meant I only got to 18 miles or so - I'm glad I did it but it was a struggle to keep hydrated, I drank over 1.5L while I was out and still came back feeling dehydrated.

In contrast the runs that followed it felt pretty good, a much faster 10 miles on Thursday, my second fastest Parkrun ever at 20:08 (and I reckon I could even have been even closer to my PB if I hadn't had to swerve round a few people on the penultimate corner) and then another good 10 miles today. Now it's just a case of a few fairly gentle runs for the next couple of weeks and trying not to injure myself.

I've decided that I'm going to start running home from work once or twice a week from June and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for running backpacks? I think I'm looking for something with space for a hydration bladder and probably 10-15L of storage space so I can bring things home from work that I don't want to leave there. I will go and try out a few as fit can be a very personal thing but thought I'd ask in case anyone had a recommendation.

Great running Itchytrigg and Semi-pro

I've been taking a break form running since my marathon, mostly swimming and cycling instead. Did a few test run and muscles felt great but my left knee which all of a sudden became painful in the marathon started to ache a little so i've just backed off entirely. A few weeks away form running with plenty of core strengths and leg exercise will hopefully do the trick and set a good base to start a new cycle by the end of June.

Did an easy 10 mile last night @5:30kms felt rubbish between 4 and 8km, but then slowly started to feel better again.

Found a Strava segment where my wife has the QOM, I think I can get the KOM. We'll then have KOM and QOM. Going to go and try and get it tonight.

Then on Wednesday I have a club league race in the New Forest.

@Semi-pro be interested in hearing what backpack you find, if I commute in I've been using my old small bikehut cycle bag. It's ok when only carrying my phone/wallet/keys/pass but can't fit anything else in it, aside from water I don't think I'd want to carry much else.

@DP, I quite like a down week every now and then as long as I get on the bike instead, as long as it's not too long a break I find I come back more determined than ever

After my long run Sunday I changed up my plan, normally I take the day off after a long run but instead I went for a 30 min recovery run at about 8:30/mi, was quite tired legs but felt better by the end of it, and today went out at lunch for a hard-ish session, 2 250ft hill repeats followed by a 6:30 mile.

Feeling pretty well rested to be honest which I'm surprised by.

Got in a 10.0m run today, felt really good. 34m.for the week, just real easy 4-7m runs mostly. Slowly reverse tapering from marathon, hoping to be back up at 75m by July 1st. Otherwise lots of swimming, biking, core & leg strengthening. Feeling as strong as an ox

Good stuff there DP, I think I need to get some cycling back in again as well as some core/upper body work.

Last week finished out pretty well, ran 10 miles home from work then 10 miles to work Thursday/Friday, only a 12 hour break made for some tired legs but still ran a good pace and heart rate. Finished out with 13.5 Sunday to give me my best week yet with just over 42 miles. Have been building miles up over the last 6 weeks so will knock it back a little this week.

Summer arrived ere unfortunately, 24*C and humid as a jungle. like running in a sauna, its really unpleasant and the heart rate just shoots up within 5 minutes trying to keep you cool. I hate the summer, can't await for October to roll around and hard training can commence without the risk of overheating!

I wanted to do 11-12mile run but started feeling dizzy at 9.7 with the sun beating down so I crawled back to the air conditioning and a cold shower. Things only get hotter form here on out.

Today I gave up trying to inside and just went to the gym on the treadmill. Just passed 31*C now, and insane humidity levels. The sauna at he gym was more pleasant than going outside!

Oh how I would want it to be 8*C, throw in some rain and wind and it would be perfect for a good hard workout.

Didn't realize but the boring treadmill run this morning brought me to 1000miles for the year! Looking forward to the next 1000.
