Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Buckster: Congratulations on your time, that's excellent.

Beasty: and congratulations to you on your first half marathon and 10km PB.

It's obviously a good day for PBs as I managed 19:54 at Parkrun today, the cooler weather certainly helped me and I'm pretty pleased considering I was feeling rather tired this morning when I started and didn't expect to get anywhere close to a PB. I've got a 10km coming up next weekend and then a half marathon at the end of October so most of my training has been building up to longer runs which is another reason I didn't think I'd be in PB shape for a 5km.

Well done all on the PB's, flying in thick and fast!

This week has not gone well for me, took a couple days off after the 1/2 then a short easy run on Wednesday which felt really good, then the stomach bug the kids had the few days prior hit me like a freight train Thursday morning...feeling mostly human again today so will try and get out again tomorrow for a 8-10 mile run and hopefully get back on point next week.

So did it in 27.39 but that was a slow pace. One of the guys we did it with was the pace maker and I could have easily done a bit faster; he's just back from a 2 week all inclusive holiday so wasn't at his best. But, it was great fun! Just signed up to a 10k on October 2nd. So, training for that begins Tuesday!

Did the 10k today, Great Scottish Run. Did it in 49.55. Had to walk three times for a few meters but really happy with the time. Not bad for a first ever 10k I think.
I've done a 10k before in training And that was 54 mins so good going I think.

I also got PR this weekend, although slightly disappointing.
Last Saturday I played a drunken Oktoberfest soccer game and suffered a hard tackle. A lot of pain all up my left leg, but especially my hip which I suffered from in March. Took an easy weak, 2 runs totally 9 miles. Almost didn't start the race but I paid $100 for this and wanted the t-shirt and 'free' beer.
Started put OK,slightly carried away trying g to keep up with lead group at 6:20 pace but as soon decided to drop to 6:30. The heat and humidity were horrible,i was sweating buckets and had a hard time hydrating at that pace. Got to mile 10 and was looking forward to a top 10 finish and then disaster struck. Horrible side stich, tried to run through it but it was horrifuc and forced me to walk. Tried to push through but it was miserable. Eventually I could get back to running but nit before 4-5 people passed and patted me on my back. I just couldn't get back in to race pace with the pain and pushed to a 1:28:11 finish, loosing around 3-4 minutes. Good enough for 4th in age group,16th overall. Would have been 2nd on AG podium if I didn't get a stitch and would be In a good chance of a top 10 overall.

Not bad, and hard to imagine since I've only been running seriously for less than 18 months. So got a new 5k and 10k PR(around 20:7 and a 40:20, need to look at offical splits later. But these are just soft record,e. G.i have never run a 5k in my life

You need to ignore this list training abd reside despite being sick tour legs are recovering from the training stress and you will come.back stronger and.more immune to injury. Not easy to be positive about it but there some plus points to complete rest.

At least that is what I try and tell myself!:D

10kis a really hard distance to do well at. Well done!

I am doing a 5k charity run on Thursday, have only ever run it three times, once last year 33:30, then I stopped running until Aug this year and I've done 39 and 36 mins so far. Will be happy if I can do 33 on Thu but it's going to be tough.

Thought I'd jump in with the weekends PB's

Did Bournemouth Half Marathon done in 1:36. The first 10km I just flew through in 45mins, felt completely effortless. Pace only started to slow at 18km. My previous HM PB was 1:41 so took 5mins out of that.

Treated myself to a rather nice pair of Asics DynaFlyte shoes as my Kayano 22's have done nearly 700km now. Got my gait analysed again and it turns out my Kayano's are completely wrong for me. The chaps in the shop where surprised I'd not had any issues.

Wow lots, of PR's this weekend, well done everyone!

That is a great time for the half. Good that you got your gait analyzed. You don't usually get issues quickly, it is a cumulative thing. Very slowly you end up putting additional stress on part of your body that eventually can lead to an injury. Your body is also good at adapting to things that aren't quite right, but the end result is less efficiency as well as injury risk.

Main thing is to be positive, you will be surprised what your body can do when it matters. good luck!

Halfway through C25k now and looking forward to my first park run in early Nov. Went out this morning and there was definitely a chill in the air! Made running a bit nicer admittedly.

Thanks for the pep talk :)

I took your advice from earlier in the thread just now and took my time to run slowly, maintaining the ability to talk and I just did 5k in 34:51...that's me done until Thurs. I actually felt really comfortable and the final km was at 6:25/km and it felt fine, best run of the year, its a shame I didn't start a few weeks earlier as I would have smashed 33mins, oh well, it's still worthwhile!

I have tried a number of times to get started with this and have given up each time so this is a bit of a departure for me :-)

Going to try and stick with it as I am actually quite enjoying it at the moment. Winter is coming though, so that is the next test I guess.

It took me years to get started properly, I always picked up running and loved it for about 2-3 weeks and gave up a week later due to injury or boredom, for another 6-12 months.

For me there were 2 critical changes requird before I loved running full time.:
1) Run slower and easier. For most of the runs. If you are busting a gut every time, getting completely winded then running is going to be horrible, daunting you will get injured. Running should be fun, and easy most of the time. A little bit of hard work goes a long way too much hard running will decrease performance before you end up injured.
2) I needed goal. Running in and of itself just wasn't cutting it for me. I needed something to work towards, so I set my sights on a Marathon (and 20kg weight loss). I still need goals, now I am aiming for faster times, winning age group models and longer distance events. You an start small and work big, so see if there is a 5K coming up etc. Lots of go couch to 5K (C25k) programs out there as a first step.
