Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

btw - anyone own a Fenix 3 ? the power button on my 310XT is getting a bit dodgey and fancy an upgrade

its done ok though - about 3 years old, about 2.5k miles, and numerous submersions in bogs and rivers during XC - so cant complain :)

I have a fenix 3 hr, mainly use it for cycling and walking but have done one swim and recorded my first run tonight. Only had it a couple of weeks.

...and yes I did just randomly run up and down! Staying at the Premier Inn and don't know the area so I just ran until the street lights stopped then ran in another direction, repeat for 2 miles!

So first run tonight, I normally do a lot of cycling but also travel for work a fair bit so want a second sport I can do when away from home. No idea on pace or what not but comparing my heart rate to what I get on the bike I think it is fair to say I went at it too hard. I'll get there though :)

Damn, I hope I have better luck.

My training plans for the next 6 months largely depend on the ballot result. If I don't get in, my running will take a backseat to cycling. If I do, it's all in for a sub-3h marathon!

York still has space for 2017 if you don't get in - excellent race when I did in 2014 and looks to be keeping up the reputation.

thanks lordrobs - looks good - how you finding it so far ?

does the optical HR sensor "feel" weird on your wrist ? just from photos looks like it sticks out a bit so to speak rather than the bottom of the watch being flat ?

I think the HR ones all have a Sapphire screen ?

I've an old Iphone 4 - which fits in my back pocket - and which I use for music and offline maps when I am either going on a long run or away with work on business in area I don't know

I have offline open maps type apps so can't really get lost - I place a marker where the hotel etc is so I know where to get back to and off I go :)

Don't have a fenix 3 but picked up a 920Xt really cheap refurbished last week. Prices have shot down with the release of the 735Xt but AFAIK the 920Xt i better in almost every single way.

Not quite the same I know but big price difference and more similar to your 310XT.

keep your pace conversational, i.e. you should be able to chat with a friend or call your wife on the phone and not have a labored speech. No need ot run any faster for the most part. If you really want to race at peak then about 10-120% f your weekly miles can be done faster, stuff like track work or lactate Threshold runs. Running is different to cycling, you need to spend much less time close to your FTP equivalent. Its less beneficial, and much more risky.

I got the SORRY magazine from the Marathon people. Still got a chance to get one of my running club spaces.

I can't run at the moment, I climbed Snowdon (Crib Goch) at the weekend then ran down the Llanberis path in 39minuets. Its ruined my legs, but I guess they recover stronger so that's all I have to remember.

Went for a run today, only 2 miles, but it's been nearly 2 months since I've exercised due to medical issues. Felt good but I gotta say I felt the cold when I started though.
Since I've only ever run in the warmer months, what kind of clothes are the rest of you wearing for the winter? Shorts and T-shirt were o.k for today, but I'm not sure how much longer that's going to last for?

Also, while I'm asking, how do you go about carrying water?

Shorts and t-shirts down to about 4*C if no wind, then i'll wear a log sleeve running shirt or add arm warmers if i think it will warm up.

If it is windy or colder then i wear some Nike running compression/tights.

Everybody is different, got to find what works for you.

I overheat easily so for me...

Always shorts.
I have poor hand circulation so always gloves below 10C!
Headband that covers ears generally below 10C.
Vests above 10C
Short sleeves 5-9C
Long sleeves <5C and maybe a windproof gilet if 0C or less.

For water, I've never needed hydration below 13mi but may take a running bottle if it's particularly hot and I'm doing a half.

My biggest problem was lack of street lights. I pushed my luck a bit but then had visions of a twisted ankle occurring!

I have very boney wrists and don't notice it at all. I find it very comfy TBH for such a large watch. There are still Sapphire and regular versions of the HR, sapphire has a dark bezel which lots of users report can scratch as it is a coating that is applied to the stainless steel. The regular one has a brushed steel bezel. The toughest combo would be sapphire with steel but they don't offer that! Main thing for me is that it is smart enough for work so I can use it for activity tracking and not have to take a second watch on business trips.

I ordered the performance bundle as I wanted a HR strap for turbo trainer work and I did have the strap on for my run as I wanted to see what the run dynamics stuff recorded, not that I really understand it! First strap was DOA but the supplier swapped it straight over and all has been well with the second one.

Thanks for the tip. I thought I was going pretty slow but I was definitely well out of puff!

Good time.

Which are the most picturesque marathons/halfs to apply to in the UK, I like inspirational scenery when running or looking out to infinity across fields.
(not a music listener & favourite run at previous address was really off road track up to the top of a nearby vantage point )

I use artificial non-cotton running tops (in the UK anyway) which do not get cold/wet, retired cycling tops are great/colourful.
Socks can be more problematic - Nike Dri-fit, I have used last 5 years (after run speed1) resilient/padded/absorptive so much so, shoes padding is worn, but I am not convinced artificial fibres are sympathetic with any heal cracks.

Running on business trip is great, agree, to counteract calorie disruption - hotel gym would be sole destroying, very much an adventure, used to run regularly in Dallas/Houston that I needed to visit ( white rock lake perimeter for weekends)

If anyone needs a good running light I can thoroughly recommend this:

I got sick of headtorches bobbing around; this one sits on your chest and is almost unnoticeable that you're wearing it. There are three brightness modes. The re-chargeable USB battery last for ages and you also get three red lights on your back.

I want it just to look like Tony Stark to be honest!

GG Firstborn, very good time indeed.

Trainings been pretty lax again as picked up a nice cold so taken about 4 days off so far, feel like it's clearing so hopefully get back out tomorrow.

Did anyone else get the winter training top from the London Marathon? I did but my brother did not, I assume it was as I donated the entry fee but he didn't. It's pretty tasty if slightly on the small side for a medium.
