Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

I've ordered a Garmin 235, I was waiting to see if the price dropped at all today. They are on offer for £165, so ordered. My trusty 405 is starting to show its age. I'm going to need new shoes soon too, my general purpose shoes (Asics Cumulus) have done nearly 900km, and they don't feel the same anymore. I'm going to try on some Brooks Ghost 10 and Adidas Ultra Boosts I think.

I looked at my mileage for the year and 1000 is doable with a few more long runs before the end of the year.

Thanks for that... I don't have a fitness tracking watch and was looking at the Garmin but the ~£200 price was a little much. £164 much better! Ordered. Now what can I sell to subsidise it? Merry xmas to me! haha

Not run this week. Weather means the off-road sections of my routes are a little impassable as I don't have proper off road shoes. I want to get some proper road running shoes and trail shoes... the next expesnive purchases.

Wilmslow 10k on Sunday, 3k people entered. Did 52 at Chorley so gonna aim for the 50 min pacer and hopefully the lack of activity this week doesn't show me up :)

Doncaster 10k for me this weekend. Sub 50 would be nice given as a cold/cough as hit training over the last two weeks. Managed a very steady 12k last Sunday, so see if the legs show up on Sunday morning!

Nothing beats a good night sleep TBH.

Caffeine and good hydration helps.

And of course a good pacing strategy, don't go out too fast.

D.P. are you Tim Sterling on Strava ?, whoever he is completely bonkers distance running :), very impressed!

That is me. I like to run, and I like to eat. The 2 cancel each other out!

I normally get in at least 70 miles a week but I'm in a recovery phase after the marathon. I like to do 60-90mins a day, with an off day 2-3 hours. I don't intend to run high volume, it just happens by being consistent. In the spring I hut a few 100 mile weeks just by because I was in a running grove an 2 hours would just fly by.

Wow, those are crazy number. Think most I've done is 18 miles in a week. Then again, I'm only a couple months the into.

Up early to head down to the Wilmslow 10k. Gonna be a cold one, maybe wet, but I'll be there shorts and t-shirt making the worst of it haha.

Haven't run this week, but I'm not hung over so hopefully beat my 52 from last weekend. I did a 30 mile cycle yesterday though so that might bite me. I feel good though.

My ankles still a bit knackered. Think after twisting it on Tuesday i then had Thursday/Friday off work which was spent walking around all days rather than resting sat at a desk. Followed up with being on my feet for around 12hrs a day all weekend.

Hoping that being back and desk bound this week means it recovers nicely!

49:10 chip time on Sunday which I'm pleased with after the cold / cough limiting full training.

Happy with the reasonably consistent splits once I'd got out the "traffic" from the start. Good PB potential on the course, couple of easy uphill drags and then one shorter pull up to the turn around point with about 2km to go.

Do you always record in Km or do you switch when you're doing a km based race?

I sometimes think it'd be handy if Strava let you switch easily. Although there's every chance that they do and i've just not found it.

I signed up to the Premium service for the trial but not sure there's too much extra in there to justify the cost.

That's a shame, especially after your PB at Chorley last weekend. Hopefully it recovers soon. Have you any other events planned?

Wilmslow was a success. I broke up with the girlfriend last Tuesday and was due to go with her and her colleagues so was a big thing for me to line up with 3k people alone, I used to be a very different person where anxiety would have stopped me even running around near home let alone this. Was a good route, I set off optimistically and had good pace for 5k but then a stitch bought me back to normal and couldn't shift it. Ended up with another PB, 50:07 but left nothing on the table this time so will need to train more.

So that's a 56, 52 and a 50 and 2 months worth of running & training. Gotta set myself into the 40s now. Forerunner 235 will land this week so that'll help pace myself when training and during events.

Saturday I did a 30 mile hilly (almost 3k gain) cycle, Wilmslow 10k yesterday then having to cycle to work (10 miles each way) as my cars broken. I shall be sleeping well tonight!

Great work. Seems you already have the fitness from cycling so i imagine it's just a case of training your legs to get used to running and sounds like you'll be capable of some great times. Sorry to hear about your girlfriend too. Looks like you got something good from the relationship though if running has given you more confidence :)

No other events planned. I think i'll look towards a half next summer but in the meantime i'll just try and keep plugging away by myself. I begrudge the entry fees :p

I did a 10mile race yesterday. I ended up having several beers, Rum and a curry the night before. Dragged myself out of bed at 7am, after a terrible nights sleep. I ate one toasted tea cake, and had cup of tea. Felt awful.

I felt ok while running only a minor headache and somehow managed to run 71mins, only 30secs or so off my PB. As soon as I stopped, the hangover kicked back in much worse than before!

I honestly don't know how I ran like that, feeling like I did.

Thanks Martyn. I have neglected the cycling over the last year to 18 months compared to previous years. I've actually spent most weekends hiking. That has never seemed to do much for me fitness wise... but then I realise it's kept me at a good minimum level. I've done a lot of ridge and 11 hour walks over the last couple years so I guess to most they would be tough.

Running has given me a much needed boost. Didn't expect to like it as much as I do and I'm seeing and feeling the benefits already. Looking at local running groups in the Ribble Valley now to get involved with the social side of it so I'm hopefully pushed more.

I plan to do a half early next year. I think Burnley half is in March so I'm signing up to do that, might see if I can get one in earlier. Plan to push myself to marathon distance privately next year but don't expect to be doing an official marathon, will have to see how I go.

Hah, I don't mind the fees, I like the medals!

Great effort then! This happened to me at Chorley 10k. I threw up before I set off in the car yet once I got running I just seemed to snap out of it. Afterwards I had to go back to bed though, it was horrible. Never ever doing that again.

My next race is the Longridge 7 Xmas Pudding race on the 10th. Looks like a good deal of elevation so should be fun.

Forget what above people are running, and ignore any artificial goals like you must run X miles a week. You can only train based around your own fitness and what our body can manage without getting injured. It took a couple of years before I could handle consistent high volume, and to manage this I have to be very careful in training, recovery and add things like strength training.

By runnign 6-7 days a week each of my runs can be shorter and more manageable with faster recovery. That is not soemthign you can do immediately but adding extra days of runnign will see big improvements in a a safe manner. I also make sure my easy runs really are easy, and that I use quality runs parsimoniously. Hard workouts on the track etc are great, but extremely l dangerous. Pacing is important, I ran at 8:20 a mile today, pretty typical for an average run on the roads. I do most of my runnign around 90seconds slower than my marathon pace, 2min:30 slower than 10k pace. I see a lot of people doing their training runs faster than me but their race times are much slower. Train slow, race fast.

Cor Blimey Guv... It's so cold up north at the moment! Was meaning to go last night but at 10pm it was -2 and so I gave it up for a bad job. I think I am just going to have to go for it and put up with the cold at the start :-(

-2C is OK, it been that msot mornings for the last week here, albeit it does warm up a lot an hour after sunrise.
The hard part is going out the front door, then its easy and actually far more pleasant than the summer. Good quality clothing helps, whereas in the summer any cheap polyester shirt & shorts will work, when it is cold the better branded stuff makes a difference in comfort. I love my Arteryx and Under Armour running gear. A good pair of running tights makes a word of difference. The only thing is the clothing choices has to vary a lot with small temperatures/wind differences. In the summer it makes little difference to clothing if it is 10,20 or 30C etc, but in the winter 0C is different to -5 which is very different to -10. You need to add more layers, think about adding a head band, then a hat, gloves go form thin softshell to relative thick insulated and you need to layer up. When it gets really cold you can get special insulated underwear to prevent your balls freezing!
