Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

This week was meant to be an easy semi rest week but it turned out to be a very very easy rest week instead. Visitors over from Brazil and then everyone out and about meant I only managed 1 run this week. Here's hoping it won;t be too hard to get going again!

So last stretch of C25K and I think disaster is about to strike. I've continually got stitches (not enough to hurt or stop) since I started the longer running and have conciously tried to slow down. Today I ran the slowest I could without walking and still got stitches. Also today I got a sharp pain in my knee towards the end of the run that has stopped after I've ran. This also occured on on fridays run. I suspect the answer is going to be stop and start again in a couple of weeks.

I find I get stitches very quickly depending on what and how much I ate before doing a run. Even with only a small meal (i.e. breakfast cereal) I have to give myself at least an hour before running.

If I've had a big lunch, no running at all for the rest of the day.

Did anyone else do the National XC Championships at Parliament Hill? The weather was really nice for it, the course was suitably muddy and it was good fun but as expected it was a walk up the first hill and then there were a couple more bottlenecks on the first lap where we basically came to a standstill - I did enjoy most of it but I lost quite a lot of time with those hold-ups so it always felt like I was trying to catch up to the time I'd lost. I did also manage to break my XC spikes, one of them has snapped a mounting point so that kept jabbing my foot but they've lasted almost two full seasons which seems fairly respectable.

-10C and an even stronger wind (the kind of wind where birds fly backwards and tall building swing like trees). Chickened out of my run so far, might warm up to -5 by afternoon and can run then...

Times liek this I wish I had my gym membership or owned a decent treadmill. Not only is is cold as **** but I really wanted to do some intervals or tempo run but impossible with the wind

Will be treadmill for me this week I think. Forecast looks like it is warming up for Sat so maybe i will get outside then :-)

Yup, I was there. I enjoyed it. I came 1705th, in about 61mins. I cannot fathom how the winner got round in less than 40mins, seriously impressive.

I had rubber lugs, I wondered how the guys with spikes would get on, going over the tarmac paths. The spiked runners seem to be able to corner with more speed. Turning in the mud was hard, as was the off-camber bit towards the end of the lap.

Well I tried to give myself the full D.P treatment yesterday (actually. That sounds weird given the popular acronym for DP!)

I’m on holiday in the Lake District and marked out a route from our cottage.

Started off quite nice but then hit a really steep hill. I’m definately not DP so Managed about half way up before I ended up walking. Also ended up cutting it in half because part of my run was along a main A road and there was no footpath so I was on a fairly narrow road with cars whizzing past at 60mph. Didn’t feel safe as they’d come round a corner right at the edge and have to swerve to avoid me.

I think I will pass on the D.P. and just stick to treadmill tonight!

If I could have I would have. Actually Monday wasn't too bad, although cold as **** I took it as a challenge, and when turning back getting a tail wind it was pleasant. I wore a t-shirt, technical base/mid-layer for skiing and a Patagonia Houdini running jacket to keep out wind, ski gloves, head band, and hood drawn over head. UA briefs and a thick pair of running tights. Yesterday was worse for some reason, not quite as windy but somehow my groin was more exposed and I literally froze my dick! It really frigging hurt and after a few miles I and to stop and do some hand warming.... The defrosting hurt just as much. Luckily from that point I had mostly a tail wind so thngs kept comfortable. Now I see you can buy "wind briefs", with windproof front panels.

Slightly less windy today but still nasty. Got in my Lactae threshold workout: 3E, 6T, 4.6hilly "E" - 13.59mi, 1:40:40 7:24/mi, 1043. Where I was doing my tempo miles the head wind was on the uphills so the split times are highly variable: 6:38,6:48,6:17,6:43, 7:6:31: 5:55.. The GAP for these is much more consistent (6:24->6:32), except the last mile is still a 6:03. The uphill stretches were at 10K effort, the downhill at HMP, except the last which I think was a good LT pace but a slight downhill and tail wind throughout. Feeling positive about this run, would have been nice to have some flat wind-free running to see the 6:2x laps because that is where I was at last fall.

My girlfriend is after some cheaper womens underwear, shes found the runderwear stuff but at £15 a set for something that is required 5 days a week it soon adds up. Any cheaper alternative, or just head to Sports Direct/Decathlon?

TBH, if she likes what she has I would just buy more of the same. Comfort trumps price, and you just don't know how other underwear will work. I have some cheaper and more expensive pair, some pairs I barely touch because they lead to chaffing, regardless of the rpice but in general the more expensive tend to work better.

Running clothes will last a long time so the cost is not a factor unlike running shoes. On the flip-side you can buy some generic sports underwear form Amazon and see how it works out, if it isn't good for running they can be used in the gym or as everyday underwear.

The problem is she doesn't really have anything so I'm trying to get her some so I dont have to listen to her moan.

Have never seen the need for different briefs for running, compared to other clothing which is specific ( shared with cycle/walk/ski) ... so just regular coton stuff with flat seams.
If I was regularly getting soaked to skin maybe I would re-consider.
was surprised by DP's (coton) T-Shirt base layer - always use artificial Patagonia capilene for all sports UK's never hot.

Probably some misunderstanding but I would never use cotton t-shirts running, I barely own any.same for underwear, tech underwear from Under armour, Nike etc.

It was probably this bit :-)

I wore a t-shirt, technical base/mid-layer for skiing and a Patagonia Houdini running jacket to keep out wind, ski gloves, head band, and hood drawn over head.

I read it as
  • T-Shirt
  • Technical Base/Mid Layer for Skiiing
  • Patagonia Houdini Running Jacket
  • Ski Gloves
  • Headband
  • Hood

Yeah but the t-shirt was also a polyester quick wicking, probably nike. I see why you might have assumed a regular cotton shirt from.my description, but cotton is just plain nasty when exercising

I think i tried a cotton t-shirt once and decided never to do it again!

In this wind and cold I am just in shorts and short sleeved top in the utility on the treadmill for now. Supposed to be a long run on Sunday and i am just hoping the weather stops being so hideous as I can't imagine 2.5 Hrs of treadmill!
