Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Yeah but i secretly was hoping for under an hour at Chorley. This time around the closest i've done to 13 miles is 10 miles back in February and that was without all the niggling injuries i keep picking up!

Might do London next since I have a good for age time and guaranteed entry. Lots of races between now and then though

It's not guaranteed anymore. They just changed it so it's limited to 3000 men and 3000 Women. Also they drop the time from 3:05 to 3:00

Seen that, real shame but I can use my 2:56, and perhaps i.might get faster if I recover before Geneva

I’m currently basing my attendance for the Blackpool half tomorrow on how I feel in the morning.

I’ve spent 7 hours today shoveling sand and stone into a cement mixer and am absolutely exhausted. Not to mention the heat and not much food all worked towards making me feel quite dizzy at various times.

Hoping lots of stretches, water and sleep will do the job!

Well I finished which is about all I can say. Yesterday definitely took its toll which so much energy used and not a lot of food as I tired really quickly after having started pretty well.

Towards the end I think it was a case of run half a mile and then walk a bit.

Was keeping an eye out for the 2:15 pacer as feel I could’ve still hit that but I finished in 2:17 and there was no sign of him passing me so not sure what happened to him!

Then came home and had to walk the cement mixer about a mile back to the rental shop. Not fun!

Least that was when I was capable of running. I seemed to be level with the guy on his bike for quite a while.

Also shows why I struggle.... Because I’m fat :p

Well that was warm. Ended up at 5:42:46

Better than expected in the weather

Finishing for most was an achievement in that weather. I doubt I could have done it if I was marathon fit, it was hot enough in Blackpool in the rain yesterday and I was in vest and shorts :D

So well done, how are you feeling today? Colleague of my other half witnessed 13 people collapse whilst he ran and found it really tough. I hope to get myself into one of the big marathons one day. Hoping to enter a regular one before October so I'll have done all the distances in my first year of running.

Managed a 1:51 in the half yesterday, not bad for little running time lately and much better than the 2:17 last time out due to diarrhea, haha.

Fastest half was 2:10 but that was in October and wasn't too hot. Did see quite a few people on stretchers at various points but hard to tell if they were suffering from heat, blisters or something else.

Slightly. I stuck to my plan of getting to the end and making sure i took on fluid and gels at regular intervals and in the end I even managed to speed up towards the end. I did slow around the middle and looking on Strava it seems that my peak heart rate of 177bpm was around the half way point which does fit with how I was feeling at that point. Guy I was running with had to slow later on due to major chafing issues  but fortunately I came away with some blisters and not much else :-)

@Ian_Eb

Does that mean you can now start looking at the next race? I'm eyeing up the Manchester Half in September after being disappointed in yesterdays effort. After only paying £24 for Blackpool though it's hard to justify £45 for the same thing!

Well... I said yesterday that it was enough. This morning I am thinking perhaps maybe I could do another :-)

Would probably try and stay a little more local and preferably not needing to raise money for charity as that doesn't half ass an additional layer of stress.

Next one at the moment will be http://www.congleton-harriers.co.uk/index.php/races/congleton-half-marathon because they start less than a mile from home. Will carry on with running in general in the meantime though :-)

Well done Ian_Eb for running London yesterday, the heat is a huge challenge for racing but I'm sure it was a great experience anyway and it's definitely sensible to take it easy if you need to.

Also good work Marvt74 and Dup for your half marathons too.

Saw an interview with Sophie Raworth (marathon de sable runner) who said with the heat (in London) she had basically run, just keeping her heart rate at an acceptable level,
she unfortunately did not reveal what that was though. (... BBC summary as ever just cared about fara)

Strava it seems that my peak heart rate of 177bpm was around the half way point which does fit with how I was feeling at that point
that sounds a big value, if you have moving averages near that over several minutes (ie. not a monitoring glitch that my polar chest monitor can sometimes throw up)
