Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Yeah, to be honest i probably drink too much water during the day so i've started using hydration tablets around 2pm just to replace electrolytes i'll be losing from excess weeing!

I took it on a test run, I'm not sure it's worth what you pay for the info you get... I'll use it for longer of course and see how it goes. I do like the idea of being able to Zwift at the gym. I always wanted to be able to do Zwift on the bikes at the gym...

If your Gym has wattbikes then you can use zwift kinda, done it on my phone a couple of times, just keep make free month trial zwift accounts. Tried it with one of the normal exericse bikes and i just wanted to throw it out of the window trying to pair the useless things. I guess their are exercise bikes and BIKES these days :)

Yeah, I don't think the bikes at Puregym will connect up...

I've got the Stryd and a Garmin Forerunner 735XT, but having trouble getting power to sync. I've just sent this to Stryd support, unless anyone knows here how I do it?

I'm a little confused as to the steps I should take to record using the watch, but have the runpod data appear in the Stryd app/webpage?

I have it paired with the watch, I have Garmin selected as importing runs in the Stryd app, but when I ran this evening, recording on the Garmin, nothing has appeared in my Stryd runs.

When I manually try and upload the .fit file from the watch to the Stryd webpage I get an error saying 'no power data in the file'. What should I do?

Why does having a longer rest feel refreshing? I haven't been out since last Thursday for various reasons and the more I leave it, the more anxious I feel about running again. But so far, I've found I seem to feel really refreshed after a break.

Suppose the more you rest your body the more it recovers. Although like you I struggle motivating myself and one week can easily turn into 2 weeks.

Wondering if I’m coming down with something. Got up today to do my 15 mile loop and struggled again. Got to about 3.5 miles and turned around and took a shorter route back so finished around 6.5 miles.

I finish for Christmas on Tuesday so my plan is to aim for around 5 miles tomorrow later in the day to give my body more time to wake up and fuel and then have Monday/Tuesday off and try and tackle the longer route on Wednesday. The wife is in work so I can go around 11am and be out around 3 hours without disrupting our day

Is there a good resource to look for trail running routes? Does Strava have that functionality?

Strava doesn't specifically have a section for Trails but you can look at Strava Segments in areas where you know it's a bit off road. Otherwise i've had (some) success with Viewfinder and Komoot.

The best advice i could give though would be to find a local running club and chat to people for suggestions. I've posted about recently finding one which specialises in Trails and i've ended up through fields i'd never have considered.

I've seen you post about scouting etc so assume you know local areas in the country where you'd go for hikes etc. Just go out and run those :)

Evil XC run today.... mud hell, from a couple of races the past few weeks. Was really glad for the finish.

I didn't go for that Night Howler run, which i'm glad about given how crappy i ran Saturday morning. By all accounts it was brutal and think the mountain rescue were out finding a few lost souls!

I'll probably be heading to get a watch this next month. Which is the go to option at the moment for running watch with music? Budget £300. Thanks :)

My fenix 5 works tremendously well. Would recommend it, might be able to pick one up now for £300 now its been superseded by the Fenix 6

To an extent I regret buying the Forerunner 735XT. It's my first running watch, and love that I now have my pace, power and heart rate just a glance away, but it feels a little light and cheap and the screen feels like it's off a watch you got from a petrol station in 1989...

What's worse, before I knew I wanted a running watch I had a great offer (basically half price) on some top end Garmin's (The ones that are £600 and £400) but didn't go for it, as I didn't run at that point :(

Great thread thank you Platypus. I have just started running after not running for over 10 years. I am 37, used to be one of the best at school but of course the years of fun have caught up with me. I'm in shape to look at and been going to the gym doing weights since May this year.

Started running again in Nov and wow I am unfit! But I'm loving every minute of it but taking it really slow. I can see improvements already...I have done a 7k and two 5k slow runs so far this month and hope to clock up 30k in total this month and work from there.

My 5ks are at 30mins atm but in my youth I'd be doing around 22. I hope to get quicker but in no hurry.

What's everyones running plans over the holidays? I'll be doing Parkrun on Christmas Day, New Years Day and ofcourse the Saturdays.

Think I need around 37km to finish of the December Strava distance challenge, so I'll be chipping away at that after boxing day

Parkrun was packed this morning. Good fun though but I was gutted when I realised I left my flatband at home. Luckily someone was at the end with a clipboard, so I was able to give my barcode number and finishers token, hopefully just waiting on results now.

Merry Christmas

EDIT: Got results through, I finished 140th out of 808! Got a time of 23:27.
