Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Interesting they've added the carbon plate. That seems to be the part causing the general concerns and thought it'd been banned (in elite competition)

Although i guess, if everyone other brand has them, then it's foolish to not sell them.

Just started getting into running myself. I started because between my mates we organised a first to 100km challenge. I completed it in about 3 weeks. I did it walking though as I want to get my weight down before I start running.

I have still been mainly walking but throwing in 30/45secs of running every few mins to just get used to doing it and how it feels which might sound daft! I did attempt a day which was just a run but my knees were in pieces which I think is down to my weight.

Doing a minimum of 5k a day, 5k time of walking with some runs is around 41mins so plenty of scope to improve.

Looking forward to shops opening back up as I would like to get a gait analysis done and get some better shoes. Using a pair of Adidas NMD at the moment which aren't too bad but not proper running shoes by any account.

Been looking at getting a better watch for tracking my activity, came across Garmin Forerunner 735XT GPS Watch and HRM strap Bundle for under £200 which looks pretty good. Anyone got any advice or experience they can share?

Currently use an Honor Band 4 which is ok but if I'm going to take this more serious I'd like the gadgets and gizmos :D

This thread is getting busier recently :)

You honestly can't go wrong with a Garmin of any description to be honest and a HR strap is always good. Seems a good price given it includes the strap.

The alternatives are generally from Suunto, but i don't have much experience with them, whereas you'll find a big community with Garmin, plus the Garmin Connect software is pretty good too.

I wish more people had your attitude. I encourage people to do this all the time and just gradually increase the running element. Good for you!

I use the 735XT, but generally don't bother with the HR strap. Granted the watch will have inaccuracies, but I can live with that :)

Cheers mate, I think its definitely helping. I am doing 30/45secs running without even realising so im keep slowly building up to full runs!

Cheers, yeah i mean the deal with the strap is cheaper than the watch itself in other places. Anyone ever used Wiggle? they have a 365 day return which is interesting, could I theoretically buy the watch and try it out for a few weeks and return if I dont like it?

I'm a 'Platinum custom' with them, or whatever it's called, as yes, I've spent a lot of money with them! (Mainly cycling stuff) Check the T&C's, I think it will state they need to be unused to be returned without a fault.

Yeah I did give it a read, it does say unused but I think in that sense I am still covered by DSR anyway. Im not quite sure what to do. I would like to try it on at least to understand the size but no shops open :(

Might hold off and put it on the christmas list if im still on the running bandwagon!

I'm happy enough using my phone with MapMyRun (or whatever app you prefer) and the £20 chest HR monitor I got off the Rainforest :D

2 seconds. 2 bloody seconds.

Shows i'm very capable of getting under 25.

My legs were a little heavy, so my plan was to just do a nice flat easy 5k as a recovery day. Started off and felt pretty good and the weather was glorious. So decided to keep pushing myself. The main annoyance was the route involved a few stiles and gates to get through which slowed me down.

Should definitely get it with a few more attempts.

Actually put some effort today and had another PB, 11 seconds away from getting under 27 minute mark for the 5k.

Think there's one variable I didn't account for though and that's warmer weather, I don't do well in the heat and felt it running when it's 18C out. Will see how my times change in the summer!

Also shins splints aren't easing up and actually little paranoid now as watched the streaming masterpiece, "Britanny Runs a Marathon" on Prime in my lockdown boredom. Without spoiling too much, someone suffers a stress fracture in it so don't want to end up like that.

It's best to ease off a bit, stop pushing for PB's every run and just have a week or so of easy runs. Let your body recover.

I went out last night and cam in with a 01:01:20 for a tiny bit over 10km. Probably best time on this for ages :-)

Didn't use normal 10k route, but chose a more local route with only 40m of total ascent. Looks like I will make it to 00:59:00 at some point soon :-)

Is it possible to view Garmin Connect workouts in advance of the next scheduled one?

The Mrs picked me up a Forerunner 45 for my birthday this week and 5k,10k and Half-Marathon plans come bundled in for free.

Curious to see what each workout entails but currently all future workouts just say ‘stay tuned for details’, pending me completing the prior one.

Ran a comfortable 16k on Tuesday and might use a half-marathon plan to get splits down.

You can see a week in advance. As it’s supposed to be a dynamic workout it’s meant to change depending on results but means the lad I run with are often miles apart and we still get the same workouts

I know it's a bad time to buy trainers for running, being unable to go for gait analysis and all, but my old trainers are starting to disintegrate and I'm keen to replace them.

I do 4.6 mile/7.3k runs 3-4 times a week; it's a route I've devised 'twice around the block' pretty much exclusively on pavements and roads, which I usually manage in ~44 minutes. I've no pretensions to go for long runs - I've got my bike for that - and I'm surprised I've progressed as much as I have with running as traditionally I've suffered with shin pain (won't say shin splints but definitely soreness when brisk walking or more) and wide, flat feet with a high arch.

Current trainers are a pair of fairly ancient Nike Air Pegasus Trail+ 3 https://www.run4fun.eu/air-trail-pegasus-iii-p-285, which I'd mothballed for years until past couple of years when I started 'running' properly.

Any (relatively inexpensive) recommendations for a very amateur 'runner' doing it for regular exercise and some mental 'headspace'?

Not sure if they are good for your gait but I picked up a cheap pair of Brooks Revel 3 few weeks ago (back to around £70ish now) and doing me just fine. Revel 2 are currently around £50 on Sportsshoes so maybe check those out?

My calves were pretty beat up yesterday so easy run today and will do the same next week, finished in exactly 30 minutes for the 5k.

Think that's basically my weakest link and what's causing issues with shin splints, anything I can be doing extra to strengthen them? Seen a few running clubs around and people wearing those calf compression things, would they help me while I'm still a beginner or just a bit of a fad?

Tried to run three times in the morning this week.

Mon: Blergh... Didn't manage to wake up at 05:30
Tue: Blergh... Woke up and then fell back to sleep at 05:30
Wed: Woke up and then lay there pondering running :-)

I reckon by the end of the week I may actually get myself out of the door. Just not feeling it at the moment though.

I'm the same Ian however I'm managing to force myself, but I really don't want to. Despite running in shorts and t-shirt year round, this sunny but cold weather here isn't welcome after the last couple weeks of warmth. I've never really enjoyed running in the warmer months for various reasons and although it kills me it's quite a nice change.

In fact I'm led on my bed looking to muster some motivation to get my PE kit on and get out.

I'm still halfheartedly getting back to it.

My goal is to do a 15 miler before the end of May, it's been ages since i've done over 8 and i really need to get back into the mindset of longer runs. It was my birthday on Saturday so i ate and drank way too much to survive anything longer than 4 miles!

I don't think I would run either if I had to wake up at 5:30am to do it :D

In fact be interesting how I get on with it once things go back to normal with a 9 to 5 lifestyle.
