Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Also I’ve never had pain like this.

Did 20 miles today where about 30% was horrendous terrain of muddy bog where you couldn’t really even run.

Also had 4000ft of ascent which was much hillier than anything I’ve done before.

I finished the run feeling pretty good. Then met the wife and did a 3 mile dog walk. At about 2 miles I felt some horrific chafing. Got home. Had a shower and I’m not sure my thighs have any skin left. I’ve been on the sofa all night covered in sudacrem.

I’ve ran further and longer before but have never had anything like this. My shirts were the same I usually wear so really don’t know what’s caused it but it’s so painful!

If they were tight there'd have probably been less rubbing. I wish i'd worn my base layer shorts.

The wife actually offered me some of her knickers to help hold my balls in and stop them rubbing. I declined!

Got the Mizuno's and damn they are snazzy, heel is all designed at an angle in relation to the rest of the sole for under pronation.

Are your balls like oranges in a net sack or something? Crikey!

I went for my first run in a long while since hurting my knee about 6 weeks ago and it was no good today either. Only ran 7km and I was hobbling by the end. It’s the lateral and medial ligaments on my left knee. Does anyone have a similar experience and how they resolved it, through exercises or similar?

Obviously hard to say exactly but I get some pain in my left knee. I find really trying to massage and stretch my quads to make a big difference.
Also opening up your hip flexors seems to help although I’m less sure of the reasons!

Maybe some strength work too? Just stand/hop on one leg to strengthen the knee.

Thanks! I’ll give the hopping a go for a while. I had been doing some lunges and squats too but I should probably lay off the weights a bit too.

I did mine last June (also cartlidge damaged) . Basically spent until Sept limping around and then physio managed to free it a bit. Still hurt when moving until January and then started running again. Has been ok since, but I still get occasional pain when sitting on the sofa, which is only for a minute or so and then passes.

My knee issue (ITB syndrome) was fixed by moving my footstrike onto my forefoot. If you're a heel striker (heel hitting the ground first) try to land on your fore or mid foot to ease the impact shock from the landing on your knee.

Even once I'd sorted that, a while later my other knee had a similar issue which only got better once I replaced my shoes. If your running shoes have a lot of miles in them then it might be time to replace them. Mine had 500 miles on them when they started causing knee pain.

Quad stretches are good too, especially if the pain is around the patella.

^ Same is true of shin splints and a number of other stress related injuries/niggles, mid/heal striking is not ideal as more impact goes via the bones that way. I've an odd one in my knee at the moment, running is 100% fine and no problem, but moving round the house especially up/down stairs can cause some strain randomly.

Forgot to share my lejog progress after week 1 :) Came out above my target and hit 43 miles which at time of submission was good for 195th. Taking my rest day yesterday and I'm back down to 403 after todays run, but it all depends on when people submit their millage as you can do it as and when you feel like it. Out of 3500 runner I'm happy with that and wonder how it'll unfold as the weeks start to pass. December finish should be possible, maybe even late November.

The leaders are out of this world though, 1st is on 208 and even 10th is 111 miles, not unexpected really that this type of event attracts the ultra runners.

I was watching a documentary on the Big Backyard Ultra, it's a 4ish mile loop, and each lap starts on the hour and it keeps going until there's only 1 person left.

Absolutely crazy how some people cope. I think the course record was something like 280 miles over around 65 hours!

I'm not sure i'll ever not find this weird, but looking at my run from yesterday. My first 3 splits are identical.

Given things like elevation changes, delays crossing roads etc, it's eerie to still be that consistent. Especially when all i was doing was trying to stick in Zone 2

Funny beast this running business, haven't had a chance to run since Thursday so decided to throw another 10k in to catch up.

Wasn't feeling it and forced myself to go today so just kinda switched off and did a better time than last week and honestly not even feeling that tired after it as barely pushed myself. Still 1:51s over an hour mark though but at least slightly heading in the right direction.
