Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Went for a spur of the moment run last night. Had some spare time so did a 5k. Left my Garmin watch at home and recorded it, I thought, in the Wahoo app, but I must have set GPS to 'only when app is in use'. It got distance, HR, cadence, everything but the actual route!?

Anyway, I hear Garmin are getting back to normal? No-one seems to know if they paid up though?

How strange, are you sure you were not jogging on the spot ;)

I've heard Garmin is slowly recovering and people are seeing some activities syncing through but the app is still showing them as "down for maintenance". I doubt they paid up, they should have had enough backup and redundancy to be able to swap out all the affected systems but when your distributed service is this large it takes a fair chunk of time bringing systems back as well as ensuring not a single node is left infected or it'll take over again.

I've been back on my apple watch since it happened, Strava app and the workout app are crap compared to a dedicated running watch but it'll do. I say crap purely because they can't do live pace (only split or average) and lack any form of lap/workout loading. I'm also disappointed Strava watch app won't link with your phone during workouts, as if you've got your phone with you you'll get a better GPS from it as well as all the live features (and live pace!), but nope they are totally independent which is a real shame.

That's a lot which annoyed me about the Strava app on the watch too and why i switched to Garmin, i think it's an Apple Lockdown issue where they can't tap into all the data. Similar to how you can't use Spotify on the go without your phone (or at least you couldn't when i had mine)

As for the chaffing, maybe you're right about materials wearing down. I don't replace my running kit very often and some of the shorts/tops i've got, i've had for a long time now and wear it for lounging around the house too so they're always being washed. Maybe i should consider changing a few things.

I basically always wear some kind of a compression layer on under shorts and top, can't remember the last time I had issues on a run or hike.

Anyone had issues with your glute muscle?

I did another run to work and back day last Thursday, and I'm still limping around paying the price.

In the last couple of miles (of the last run!), I felt something odd in my right ass cheek, being blunt! Now I struggle to put a lot of weight on my right leg. Never had this issue before, hopefully it'll fix itself soon.

I find running so frustrating sometimes. It's just a never ending cycle of, all going well --> get an unjury/niggle --> find the cause --> bit better --> back to normal --> new niggle --> REPEAT

Can't say I ever had any problems with my glutes, just my calves that hurt but that's expected at my weight. Saying that, I think my shin splints might finally be getting better so hopefully improves from here.

Had another spontaneous 10k run today which was a few minutes over the hour mark, but actually not going to give myself hard time for it as I ran hilly 2 miler yesterday and ran on an empty stomach today.

I'd been using my old forerunner 225 the last few months, its rock solid (outside of garmin issues of course). I'm tempted to get a newer model as I'd like the music models, but their prices over the last few years has increased quite considerably which is a shame.

I'm the same and especially with my shorts don't replace them very often, the last pair I got rid of was only as the internal netting ripped in a unfortunate spot that would allow a single spud to slip out and then get caught...was not so fun!

Went for a spur of the moment run last night.

This was my first run since April... given I cycle 100-200 miles a week, I'm really surprised how much I'm still feeling it in my quads! Going down stairs at work yesterday was really awkward! Still very tight today.

Oh yeah... I have been focusing on bike power for the last couple of months and cut my running down to once a week. The structured bike program i am following is pretty hard so my legs are constantly spangled and running is the last thing they want but still on one run my legs hurt the day after :)

What’s good in a running short then? Saw a WAA advert of social media which look good but pricey! I could do with somewhere to store a phone and keys if that’s possible or like the look of a flipbelt

Personally I just want fully synthetic material that is light, has inner netting to keep things where they should be and a small pocket for keys (either zipper or a small insert low in a regular pocket so they won't "jump" out).

I tried a phone in a pocket and it wasn't for me due to flapping about, so either a belt or a backpack when I wanted my phone was how I handled that but nowadays that is only on my long runs I take it.

Decathlon do a cracking running short, with a zip pocket at the back, Not big enough for my S7 but I do not run with a phone anyway. But you cant fit 4 SIS Gels in it and a house key :)

Decent price and considering how much it gets washed it has held up really well.

Sounds similar to me. I don’t mind running with a phone as long as the pocket isn’t too flappy.

My personal favorites are the Under Armour Launch 9. They have normal pockets with the right one having an “inner” one which holds my phone in place quite well.

UA stuff has a habit of popping up cheap on Amazon. I keep an eye out and usually pick them up around the £13 mark.

I like the 2 in 1 style. But the last pair I had (Asics) the inner lost it’s stretch and that then made the shorts a bit useless so now I prefer separate base layer shorts/pants.

Just have a random mixture of different sport synthetic shorts, don't make much difference to me as I always wear compression style underwear underneath.

I hold my phone in my left and keys in my right hand so never have anything in my pockets.

Suppose once I break past 10k I might need to start thinking about bringing water with me and snacks so might consider a belt then.

Haha as it happens I have the Under Armour Launch 7 :) Though the inner pocker on mine can only take my keys or gels as it's very narrow. Unless you've an old Ericsson flip phone maybe?

UA is my go to, really love the stuff. Only compression stuff I have is my winter base layer leggings, might need to look into the underwear options as I've no doubt that'd do the job just as long as it then doesn't create a sauna....

Snack wise I never felt the need till I started hitting 1/2 marathon distances. There was an article I read which appears to hold true to me at least, that around the 1.5hr mark of continuous exercise is where you've nearly depleted your glycogen stores and is where snacks/gels/etc become more needed.

Maybe it's a little bigger on the Launch 9 then as i'm on an Iphone 8 and it slips in nicely and holds it in place well.

I find the UA stuff fits really well, i sometimes struggle with tops where they're tight in the odd place and loose elsewhere because i'm fat with moobs but UA stuff works well. As i say it helps you can get stuff cheap on Amazon where it's the same price as the generic stuff, i use their t-shirts, shorts and base layers. Sometimes i feel like a dick as if i'm Mr Under Armour :p

I tend to be the same, gels etc only really get brought if i'm out >2hrs and water usually the same unless it's warm in which case i'll take it if i'm out >1hr. I don't really like things in my hands when i run so try and avoid carrying water where i can!

Bumped up my mileage to 20k this week and with a hectic schedule ended up doing it in a space of 4 days, definitely feeling it this morning!

Great work. It's good to hit certain milestones like that.

I know it's easy to read this thread and see people doing huge runs and stupid quick pacing and being disillusioned but you quickly learn to focus on your own goals and just use others as inspiration because there's always someone hitting bigger numbers. Hell even DP probably looks up to other runners and he's an absolute machine!

Another vote for the decathlon shorts here. They have 2 pockets for carrying your keys and phone/gels. The phone pocket is very well placed at the back, you don't notice you're carrying anything at all. The pocket is reasonably sized, I just about managed to get my pixel 2xl in there. If you're phone is any bigger then that it won't fit.

They're comfortable, hard wearing and excellent value. No inner but I'm not a fan of those anyway; just get a decent pair of pants from Runderware.
