Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Makes sense thank you, I like the idea of going for it on hills and recovering downhill. I'll always try and get a hill in on a run, nowhere near your standards mind! I'm still surprised how fast my heart rate recovers after a hill, I guess that is showing fitness levels are increasing?

I'm similar, in that i'm surprised at recovery. What i've found more about my fitness recently is that i can keep going after 20 miles. Not easily, but i remember when i did the Manchester marathon and i'm sure i was walking from mile 15 onwards!

Awful run for me this morning. Unsure of the real reason as i ran yesterday and felt great. I think it's probably one/a combination of

1 - Boozing on Saturday night and i'm old now
2 - As per the above, i didn't eat much Sunday. Full english for brunch, but then nothing until a stir fry for tea
3 - Along with running yesterday, i also didn't seem to eat much. I snacked throughout the day, but MFP suggests i still only had ~2000kcal and burnt around 600 of them running.
4 - I needed to run before work. This is rare for me, so my body just isn't used to it anymore to just wake up, get dressed and be out the door within 5 minutes.

I set off feeling weak and ropey, but usually after a mile or so i get into a rhythm and get on with it. However today i seemed to be taking walking breaks during every mile, and generally just lacking any energy. At mile 4 i was cursing my route choice and at mile 5 i realised i needed to stop walking so much or i'd be home late for work! Switched from a podcast to some music for the last 3 miles which seemed to help and i just about managed to run the rest of the way home. Think at one point my HR was around 168 at a slow jog pace!

Goal for today is to eat a lot :D

I still haven't gone past 13 miles in one go but I am going to try and follow a 12 week marathon training schedule as a test to see where I'm currently at and mix it up a bit with some longer runs.

Shame about your run but like you always say sometimes they can happen when you least expect it! Not boozing has definitely helped me energy wise so could have been a factor for you but I'd struggle to get up out running as soon as I woke up. In fact I haven't ever done that so maybe I should give it a go. All my runs are later in the day or early morning after finishing work. Enjoy your day's food :D

Pathetic pace and ankle hurt a lot but completed my first non stop run (4km route) since November on Friday. More importantly could still walk on it without limping for too long after so some kind of healing progress.

It's getting light enough now to jog after work now so I'll try the very flat usual 5km tomorrow.

Well done, bet that felt brilliant! Don’t worry about pace, just get out there if and when you are fit enough and take your time. No point rushing into it and doing more damage :)

Disappointing. I've just had an email to say my guided day in the Lakes is off this Saturday because the weather is looking pretty horrific, and whilst it might be "ok" to go up there solo/as a group, it's another thing for them to be responsible for someone in those conditions which is understandable.

Have a few people i know aiming to run the 3 Peaks in Yorkshire which i might join. Just need to monitor the weather over that way to see if it's safe. I was out at dinner today and the wind was brutal in parts and thats on flat low level ground!

From personal experience way back when I was around 15 or 16, I would advise against deciding that the steeper shorter route up the side of Whernside is quicker  It was loads harder and maybe only saved us 5 or 10 mins! (Walking not running though)

Haha see the thing is that steep hills are good for me at the moment given in 2 weeks I need to be able to climb ~2500ft over 1.5 miles!

Think we went off route at the railway bridge and looking online now, that comes in around 1200 feet of ascent, so go for it :-)

How do you all find a cold effects your running? I *was* running around 10K every other day, I caught the mother of all colds and haven't been able to run for about 10 days, today was my first attempt back at it and barely managed 4k. I'm so disappointed :(. I'm hoping it's a temporary blip.

It's a long time since i've had a bad cold to be honest. I usually try and push myself to go out even if feeling a bit crap and doing at least a few miles, although with the wind/rain we've had recently i understand that's not appealing if you're suffering!

I'm finally off to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks tomorrow. Weather looks do-able. Hoping i don't annoy people being too slow too much though. One woman won her age category in the Lakeland 50 last year, another guy did the Lakeland 100 and is generally fairly fast, and then the 3rd guy is older but runs 65-70 miles a week and easily "potters" around a 7:30 min pace on the trails. There was one guy who's slower than me, but he's pulled out so now i'll be the annoying one dying at the back!

Had anyone tried altra shoes, I'm tempted to get the mont blanc. Already have the speedgoat 4 coming, but might have the altra as a faster option?
Week after my Bideford half next week, I have a 12.5 mile trail run to do, it's a 4 parter with the second being 37 miles eek!!!
So figured I'd get some proper trail shoes.

Running is going very well, taking it easy as to try and weed out my aches and pains.
But sustained pace is brilliant, could do with being a touch faster, but don't we all.

I saw a post about the Mount Blanc recently and agree they look great.

I’ve recently started wearing the Torin 5 road shoes and like them. I’m thinking of trying to move to more zero drop style shoes after the Spain run and eyeing up the Olympus or Mont Blanc as a trail shoe.

So it’s a trail series? Seems a big jump from 7 to 37 so good luck with that!

Speedgoats are a great option too. I had been waiting for the new 5’s as all the 4’s in a wide sold out around November but seems to be a lot of supply issues.

I’d also consider the new Peregrine 12. Seems they’re a lot more lightweight and race orientated vs the previous models.

Yeah I'm not mad on saucony given the speed 2 gave me chronic runners toe until they were broken in, took a good few runs to settle in, but yes now I love them.

Yeah I'll try and find the linky, ah here we go.

Dunno what you mean by 7, biggest run I've done is 46km, granted 4 of that was walked, as I completely empty by that point.
I need to eat around double to what most typical runners need in a run, for some reason my body is a powerhouse.

Bugger it I'll get a pair, they look gorgeous.

Sorry. I misread and had meant the 12.5 in the first series run was a big jump up to run 2.

Sounds like a brilliant series though.

See I’m cheap and need Runners Need to get them in for my discount! It’s annoying as their selection has been poor for a while.

Well fit my speedgoat 4's and yeah like people said they run a bit narrow, I can probably get away with it, but definitely ordering a large next time.
But I'm looking forward to breaking them in tomorrow, I'll be taking it easy as my achilles is still playing up.

Got my Bideford half race pack as well, so all set for that week Sunday.
