Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Got out again this morning. I can't wait to get back to a point where i can do a 5k without having to walk. It's depressing how rubbish my fitness is. It's not even like i've taken a complete break, i've still been getting out walking/running/cycling a few times a week. Surely that should keep cardio fitness at a reasonable level at least

The number of times my HR flies into the 170's is grim. It's only walking breaks which make the average sound better!

So last week i got Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 but found they were a tadge to snug in the toe box. Sent them back and got Adidas Adios Pro3 which fit great. Got them for £150ish which was cheaper than the EP3's.
I have only used them once at this weekends park run, 1 minute and 8 seconds better than 2 weeks ago and nearly at my PB set 4 years ago. Would have got the takumi sen to go with these but mrs would boot off so i'll just use these for 5k upwards at a fast pace.
3 months ago i was struggling to get under 30 minutes for the park run and now i'm a bit over 26 mins so shows getting the miles in at a slow pace really does work

Seems it's that time again where Garmin release the latest round of watches and i get twitchy.

Releasing the new Epix in the 51mm is looking good. Do i really want to spend a grand on a watch though! The Epix also seems like the battery is fairly comparable to the Fenix 7. Big difference just comes down to the screen really.

Yep, bought the Epix 51mm Sapphire version :D

Decided it felt more of an upgrade than just an iteration and battery should be plenty long enough.

You have too much spare cash! ;-)
That could have bought you parts for your Jeep :)

"Spare" i'm not so sure. However decided to go with an inline estate agent vs a regular style. So technically means £4000 saved and man logic has it's uses in these situations :D

Least it stops me constantly banging on about wanting one for 12 months (until the next one comes out). I was thinking i'd done well as mine is almost 4 years old. However i then realised that Covid meant a restriction on releases and so it's only really one iteration i've missed...

Mine will be 5 years old in Nov so maybe I can justify one.

Got a nice Fénix 6x Pro for sale :p

Currently having second thoughts on colour.
I went for the titanium looking version with the white strap. The front looks nice but I’ve just noticed the sides are white.
That’s fine with the white strap, but when I want to put a different colour on it’ll look a bit stupid.

I looked at the Garmin watches but I have a 645 music which does what I need and I just cannot find a reason to upgrade it yet.

Clocked over 20 miles last week for the first time, actually loosing weight now too. Got from just under 15stone to 14 st 3lb which I'm happy with. Not changed diet to much aside from drinking barely any pepsi compared to a few cans a day.

This heat is my worst enemy. I got nipple chafe last night from sweat and I barely sweat, and it was just a recovery run... 1hr 10 of steady state run tonight, I can't be bothered!

How's the Lakeland 100 training going?

Glad i sacked off the 100 i'd signed up to. I can barely run 5 miles at the moment!

I feel you there, kinda wish I didn't get in but I know I'd never pick it back up again if I didn't even if the momentum has fallen off.

I lost my mojo after Manchester Marathon and was gonna sack it off but just decided to get a coach to tell me what to do around my schedule.

Feels like too little too late but the aim is to just finish and leave Ultras for a couple years as they enjoyment has slipped somewhat and the time commitment isn't great either. I hope to chase a good for age time for a marathon but fancy building on my times in 5 & 10k races and do more competitive shorter fell/trail races, just need to get Lakeland done.

The goal was 100 mile Ultra before I'm 40 and I turn 38 in a couple weeks :D Hopefully I tick it off this year, but if it's this hot I'll likely not finish. I don't fancy more and more training for the next year unless I can incorporate getting the best of some shorter more fun events along the way.

I went out at 9am on Sunday and it was around 20oC that was hot with some nipple chafe
Went out this morning at 4:50am and it was 18oC and it was hot but bearable.

On Friday I couldn't get out until around 15:00 and went for 5 miles and I really struggled even at a slow pace my heart rate went to threshold when slow jogging. Think it woild have been in zone 2 just by being outside. I have never needed water on a run that distance but by God I did, lips were sore and my face was radiating heat.
Luckily I am up between 430 and 5 most days so can skip the heat usually

@Dup i feel you there. I've set this as my target before i'm 40 (172km version)

However it wasn't on last year and not been updated for ages, so maybe it's out the water.

There's also one near Benidorm which seems very popular so may switch to that. Both are mental in terms of elevation though it seems which doesn't suite me very well. Hoping the "Hill Score" on the new watch will motivate me to change that!

Yeah, no date for the first one. Route looks spicy though. At least the latter is in November, it'll feel more like home in terms of climate. Sod trying that in the heat.

Trying to fit runs around general life is such a challenge. I get away with my dinner break most days but when the routine gets spoilt I've just jibbed out in the past so now I'm working hard to fit everything in and make sure I turn up in July without any excuses.

Yeah. Tricky that. Especially when the odd hour run doesn’t offer much for a race like that.

Just been out for a run but spotted a lad in his early 20’s crying on a wall so stopped to check on him and then walked with him a while. Had clearly been drinking but had been at a funeral and I think the whole day had got the better of him.

Left him and started a run back home but the heat beat me along with a heavy stomach from tea!
