Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

got a 10 mile race today :) knee feeling a bit better - but you couldn't make it up really ..

I have a habit of ocassionally sleep walking .. slept walked into the corner of our bed night before last - woke up with big bruise on my knee and a lot of aching - hoping it will be ok during the race today...

Just back from the Manchester 10k with a 40:58. Little bit disappointed as I want sub 40 but my first stitch in a few years hurt bad!

thats a great time for the 10k Osian well done

I did the Great Baddow 10 (miles) this morning - enjoyed it - was nice running it as a member of a club this year - lots of local support. Knocked 5 minutes off last years time - so a great PB for me - 1 hr 13'40 or something :) Got me in the top 200 and a silver medal anyway - which I was pleased about.

Starting to get back into fitness after my recovery from the 100k/blisters i had....finally:rolleyes:

been sticking to XC runs as much as possible and think it helping with keeping some sort of fitness up, so going to try my first road run around 4 miles and hopefully im not too off 26mins.

By the way X-Talon 212s are insane, wish all shoes felt as light as them, you actually feel better after running with them, knowing your muscles are getting stronger and more flexible using low profile/near barefoot shoes...really makes running enjoyable.

looking for XC races now during the road season is hard though:mad:

did a 6.6 mile trail race today and feel absolutely shattered- only my 2nd trail race - more used to road running - and seems to take much more out of your whole body ... Iguess its stabilising yourself etc ...

was pathetic time ... 1 hr 40 for 6.6 miles ... but myself and quite a few others got quite lost at one point which added 2 miles onto the length, and added about 30 mins ...

was VERY enjoyable though - and thats the point really

Really starting to get back into running now, need to be careful not to up my mileage too much. Have already run 25 miles this month and I am absolutely addicted again :)

Think I am going to sign up to some runs over the summer.

Really liking the new Nike+ website, although they have a lot of bugs that they need to stamp out.

Been running for while now. Normally run 5k three times a week just to keep fit. This week I have started to run whilst holding 2kg dumbbells with each arm. Has anyone done this and is this recomended?

Depends what your aim is? Surely carrying weights would be for strength training. Are you looking to get faster? Run further?

Honest opinion?

Doesnt do anything but make it more likely that you pick up a injury.

Using weights when running is fine, BUT you need to have a good base level of running before adding weights, end of the day if you cannot run well without extra weights why make it harder for yourself.

Also adding weights should be done via hip loading, ie backpacks rather than hand weights as the weight is balanced a lot better, and less inclined to get shoulder poroblems from bad posture due to the weights.

Personally id get yourself into 6 min mile pace before thinking about adding weights, once you at 6mm pace then your running ability should be good enough to start adding weights,

even the military dont add weights untill they got their running 110% sorted and even then its tiny amounts, ;)

ow yer, my little toenail fell of during a run, yay..

Thanks for the advice guys. Im trying to build some strength in my arms. As I don't get much time for the gym, thought this may help!

Not running 6mm at the moment more like 8mm!

Could do with some help.
I recently I did the Manchester 10k, I completed it relatively easily but wasn't that fast :( (57:27).
Are there any ways to improve speed?

I was thinking of starting from scratch but keeping to a certain pace, as I won't be doing any events soon. Is this a good idea?

Hey everyone, after having some health issues mainly with mood and with sleeping i have been told it would be good for me to do some form of exorcise. I don't really like any kind of sport so i have been thinking of running. Im 21, 5ft 10 and weigh 11 stone 6.

I cant remember the last time i did any form or exercise, so i would appreciate it if someone could give me a hand. I mean whats the best way to start? Im by no means fat but i would say im unfit.

Thanks Danny.

1. Go to a running shop and get fitted for a pair of running shoes.
2. Find a nice 1 mile route to run
3. Run it if poss or run/walk at a moderate pace
4. Do this twice per week
5. On weekend find a 2 mile route and run or run/walk at SLOW pace (long slow run)
6. Increase distance by 10% for each day i.e.:

Week 1 - Tues/Thurs = 1 mile, Sun = 2 mile
Week 2 - Tues/Thurs = 1.1 mile, Sun = 2.2 mile
Week 3 - Tues/Thurs = 1.2 mile, Sun = 2.4 mile
Week 4 - Tues/Thurs = 1.4 mile, Sun = 2.8 mile

Rinse and repeat steps 3-6 :)

Pretty much the simplest way of looking at it. It may seem that the distances are real short for quite a while but they soon pick up weekly as the 10% increases add up (10 miles becomes 11 etc etc). Do not be tempted to do too much too soon as you will pick up injuries this way.

Once you have a decent running base (running around 5 miles) you can start intervals etc if you wish or follow a training plan like Hal Higdons Marathon guide etc

Hi Danny,

Well worth looking at C25k (couch to 5k). There is a 9 week programme to get you up to 5k. Once you can jog/run for 30-40mins you will see the wieght drop off and fitness increase.

Good luck

Sorry forgot to mention, get yourself a decent pair of running shoes as well!

Froomer is something like this what you mean? http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k-plan.aspx

Completed my first 10 mile run today, (1:25:23 so not exactly fast) previous furthest was a 10k. I found that having done a few 10k's I was able to do the 10 miles at roughly the same pace without any side effects. Next step is a half probably next month.

I think it took longer to memorise the route than to actually run it.

I later went for a 6 mile walk so think i'll sleep well tonight!

Finished a 14 mile run today (was aiming for 12). Smashed most of my previous records - furthest run, fastest half marathon (2.09, although wasn't concentrating on pace today), most calories burnt and longest workout duration. Starting to think about marathon running now.

I would like to run the Brighton marathon next year (my gf is running it), but it has filled up and don't think I would get enough sponsor money either to run for a charity.

It is a good feeling to run so far.

Just got back from my first ever run of the Couch to 5K and i feel like im about to die :| Took my phone with me and this is what i ended up with.
