Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Sounds like you might have gone a wee bit fast on your runnning stretches if you're that nackered, perhaps slow them down a bit for the next few runs. Hope you enjoyed it though!

I've run properly for the first time in my life for a month now. Here's what I have achieved.

As you can see, my running is quite inconsistent but I have run 75.12 kms / 46.6 miles in 4 weeks!

Has anyone tried the Runners World smartcoach thingy?

I'd quite like to do a 10k or two when I am back in the UK so thought I would give it a whirl. First impressions are the "easy" paced runs seem overly easy in terms of suggested splits but the tempo/speedwork splits look pretty tough.

Maybe I am missing the point and have been missing the point a bit with my runs recently and as most of my runs are steady paced but still an effort (even the longer runs that I do - currently 12k is my longest recent run) when I should be varying it a bit more. I guess two or three properly easy runs plus a really quite tough run each week would be of more benefit?

Hmm running in the heat and after two heavy nights ain't easy! :p

+1

Did an amazing 1.3 mile run before giving up, wtf going on with me,

Thankfully after 100k my 3 mile time is still around 19:51 mins thank god it hasnt gone too **** up.

need to get back to doing 4 milers as these tempo runs really do knock the mins of the Pbs, seriously it quite amazing what a 4 mile tempo run can do....if you can stick at it. once a week.

Just got back after Week 1 run Number 2 of my Couch to 9 Week cource thing. Not feeling as bad as last time and i covered 3.65km this time when it was 2.97 last time. So feel good about it :)

Have you had your gait analysed?

only just started and my man boobs don't exactly give me confidence to walk into these specialist running shops, filled with usually very attractive girls.
I'm a suffer of underpronation....

'm just trying to loose weight with out having the massive confidence beating that going to the local gym involves...

I'm not looking forward to my tempo run on Thursday. Usually run at about 9.40/m (I'm slow :( ) albeit can do that for up to about 7/8 miles. Tempo is 1m at 10.09 followed by 3 at 8.35. Might hurt :(

I have used them in the past and IMO they are pretty good. Easy needs to be easy, many make the mistake of thinking pahh too slow and run too hard during these sessions. The tempos will be tough but that is the point - make sure you run the easy session easy to recover and build up your base.

Half marathon 7th Oct, time to get serious.

Been playing football once a week for the last 2 years and seen my fitness go up steadily. Done some small runs, time to get going on some longer ones and push for some speed.

Yeah I found it really difficult on the 2m run last night. Was meant to stick to 10.09 per mile. 10 for the first mile but 9.30 for the second :p. Need to make sure I actually stick to the slower time on my next easy and long runs.

at weekends now I combine running and gym in one long session :) gets it out of the way all in one :) weekdays I go to gym at lunch, almost every day + running club tues/thurs. Weekends don't seem to have the motivation.

so new idea a few weeks - was a non-direct run to the gym - 6km or so, 1 hour in the gym (weights only, was chest today), then approx 4km run home :) Hard work !! - but very satisfying.

can enjoy the footie with a drink tonight now without feeling guilty

Yay! Just beat my 10km personal best by 2 minutes.

Finished in 49:39 with an average pace of 4:57 mins per km

I finished my last km in 4:33

Signing up for a half marathon tomorrow.
