Sigh, just went to sign up for a half marathon only to be told that because of safety reasons you can't listen to music : /

Wow, Im suprised at the amount of disdain for running whilst listening to music in here.
I can understand that in the elite runner section of 'proper' races those runners would need to be much more aware of whats going on around them just for race tactics alone, but for the rest of the field I don't see why its such a big deal.
I don't believe that they would gain such an advantage that they would be a threat to the elites. I think in terms of health and safety people running in costumes would be more of a threat and people with loose shoelaces even more so. As for not being able to hear, are hearing tests now mandatory or if you are completely deaf are you not allowed to run now??
It doesn't bother me in the slightest if the people I'm running with/against are listening to music, each to their own.
I disagree with the whole, you aren't running a "proper" race type comment. I am, however, glad that running with music is banned in the most popular races. Runners get in the way even without music most of the time. Nothing more frustrating when you are a good 10 miles into a run.
Wow. Some people on here take running WAYYY to seriously if people listening to music and/or happen to "get in your way" whilst running annoys you....
Unless you have a hope in hell of winning some prize then just run for fun. Is that not why most people started running?![]()

Some more sense.
I can't say I pass many people with headphones after the first mile or so and don't think I've ever felt the need to announce my prescence to somebody in front of me, worried that they couldn't hear me because of headphones. In any case I'm normally putting everything into the run rather than into spotting what accessories the people around me are carrying.

This!
You get enough idiots that decide they want to start from the front of their wave (that they've optimistically put themselves in months earlier under the illusion that they'll train loads and be quick or something) and subsequently cause chaos at the start as hundreds of people try to dodge past at twice the speed of them without the added distraction of them blasting some rubbish music out of their 'beats' headphones.
That sounded like a massive rant when I didn't mean it to be![]()
