Play as the Taliban:

thats why i said virtually. but in the game [wolfenstein] you are specifically fighting the nazi regime.

in most ww2 games you are not.

err virtually never used implies it's rare to find it, but in a ww2 game (that isn't set in the pacific) it's near certain a swastika, or ten, will pop up at some point.

not really, thats why EA removed it completely from european MoH games, COD dont use it...COH doesnt use it..

its the ideological reference to a political party not the badge that the wehrmacht fought under.

I think the insensitivity is directly related to the contempory nature of the conflict, like my wife said in 10 years no-one will even comment on it, but the games designers must have known the potential for this kind of reaction and that generic multiplayers based on the relevent forces would have been acceptable whereas actually naming them specifically and recreating the environment and naming it is highly controversial and they knew this.

Have you been buying German editions or something?

They where always present in those games for me.

Not on the soldiers uniforms but on big banner flags in set pieces.

and as for cod not using it can you please tell me what exactly is flying on that flag pole?

cause it looks like a great big swastika to me?

YAY for out of touch old people.

Get a grip.

Why are videogames subject to these criticisms yet they get away with making films and music about whatever they like.
Everything should be legal, simply made an 18. Adults should know the difference between right and wrong and fantasy and reality. Or do you prefer mind control censorship?

I think war related videogames can on occation be really tasteless regardless of when they were set. I mean, look at this:

http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/brothersinarms3/video.html?sid=6196959
Saving Private Ryan was portrayed as horrific. Not 'woah check out are new XTREEEEEEEEEME gore engine.... see the enemies brains literally fly out '.

There is quite a difference.

I think playing as the taliban is fairly tasteless, but no worse than what has come before.

Maybe we can have a mod in MOH that allows you to play a Nazi commander at Belsen or something and see how not insensitive that is.

There was a MOH Spearhead mod a ways back that was a hitler skin. It was quite amusing running about with daft pantaloons and a pencil moustache...

Not having a go but surely there's plenty of things more offensive to the families of forces personnel than a video game? Here's four:
A lack of equipment and other resources - result dead squaddies and grieving families meanwhile mp's have their expenses as a right and privilege.
An outright LIE used as justification to send you guys to be bled out in some foreign desert where the people there don't want your help.
A former PM gallantly giving proceeds from some self indulgent 'memoires' to aid squaddies with no damn legs (sure the cash is useful... but the gall of it?!).
Lack of support and funding for service veterans after they are of no more use to the army.

Don't be fooled by the media kicking it up to sell a 'controversial' story, they don't deserve your indignation, especially when those same media organisations smell blood and a story a mile away when some poor bugger 'takes one for the team' ...you can almost see the sincerity flaking off the reporters as they try to outdo each other when there's a 'story' to be had.

Like I said would it be acceptable to add a mod to Microsoft Flight sim to allow you to fly a 747 into the WTC in recreation of 9/11?
.

You used to be able to do that, of course.

The logical next step here is the papers screaming that this game is a training device for Taliban, in fact it's a recruiting device for the Taliban!

errr cod:waw

final scene

Huge ****ing swastika.

yea final scene, to show the ideology of the final encounter not of the individuals you were fighting previous to that point,

hence the soldiers you kill dont wear them, nor is the symbol used in choosing the mulitplayer teams even if u are the axis side.

the flags are just artifacts of the ruins or remnants in the background - not literally attached to the units you are fighting against or for.
