But for some (possibly many), 'fun' is influenced by their visual enjoyment of the game, so they go to software that can enhance the visual experience.
PUBG is not washed-out for me at all, so I've never felt the need to use Reshade or other such programmes.
It's the cynic in me I guess.
Back in the day when I played rtcw to a decent level every graphic setting was set to low just in the name of getting "that edge" it had nothing to do with making it look pretty.
But I would like to see them all removed tbh. As people are just unscrupulous as me

Made a quick vid of the problem ive been having that i mentioned earlier.

It starts stuttering when other players are close I think. The last half of that vid you can see how bad it is. Just running forward every 3 seconds or so its jerking and looks like ive stopped and starting to run again. So picking up stuff and going through doorways/up and down stairs can be a nightmare. But then it can settle again and resume being fine after the jankyness.
Ive tried reinstalling to a different SSD, putting some code into the startup properties (although I read thats pointless anyway?), changing some settings in the Engine.ini file, and turning Threaded Optimization in the NVIDIA Control Panel 3D settings. But cant figure this out. Any ideas?

Pretty sure you can only adjust the 8x/15x, unless you mean you can no longer do that?
I've been getting similar problems which appeared after the new nvidia patch I installed yesterday, I'll have a game or two after my tea and see if uninstalling the driver worked.

They removed the ability to do so on the 2x and 4x in the 1.0 releaser

Had a smashing game with my Japanese friends this evening, their morning.
Managed to kill 3 guys at the bus as they came from the left side, they didn't see me, but 2 stood in the open, third guy got behind the bus and as he was trying to revive his mate, I shot his feet from below the bus.
A minute later, I heard footsteps in the next room (behind the left wall) and took a peek, some guy there, so throw a stun grenade in the room followed by dumping a magazine from my UMP into him!
Stun grenade kills are the best.
After that, just me and 3 other guys on the roofs above me. I couldn't reach them due to the circle, sat in the room for what felt like forever till the final circle decided to move again!
With the maze of the buildings and rooms, couldn't reach the safe zone and me and this other guy killed each other in this corridor.

I am, yesterday afternoon all was well, I noticed a Nvidia driver update so I installed it. Ever since it has been unplayable. Tried a system restore which failed. Just need to work out how to roll back the driver.

And this is why I don't bother with Nvidia updates until theyve been out a month!
Oh no thats a bit rubbish. Very similar to my issue too, but im sure I wasnt running Discord whenever ive been playing recently. It is increasingly likely that its the Nvidia update then. Will try see about rolling it back somehow after work and update to let you know how and if it worked.

I updated to latest drivers via GFE and had zero problems.. so it can't be just the drivers.. and I use discord too
Just uninstall the drivers and reinstall with the previous version before the current ones.. ez pz

Have you got discord running in legacy mode too, I find that helps it to not nerf games.
