PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

Naah they wont be going nVidia, cant see them not going with an APU so that means AMD. Might not feel as bad in a post DX12/Vulkan era...

Didnt think AMD would be ready to offer 14nm to customers this year though

My biggest bugbear with the current generation of consoles is the horrifically slow CPU's so it's sounding fantastic, even if it's only a low power AMD Excavator it should be a huge improvement. Intel i5 for me though ideally.

GPU twice as powerful but smaller? 290X on 14nm I wonder? or is it easy enough to go NVidia with a GTX 970? Intel/NVidia combination would be better suited to a console with limited cooling.

Doubt they switch suppliers mid gen. Also i5/GTX970 at $499. Never happen

NX announcement at E3
Likely announcement of PS4K then too - then weve got MSs probable XO.5
Multiple VR launches this year including PSVR

Expensive year, moreso basically it feels your money goes not as far as it used to - one of those things where it feels like jumping off the console roundabout and heading towards a PC just might be easier...

Well for me Id need a new PC, but the ideas in my head moreso if I assume I have to spend £300 every 3 years on a new console (I know its my choice) then thats a sensible amount to keep a decent PC in check. With DX12/Vulkan it was always a consideration of mine as PC dev was expected to become more efficient so you didnt need to throw money just for that extra flexibility.

Its certainly a favourable idea, but think Im gonna give this a year and see how all this settles. Its not like there arent things happening in the PC world...

Neogaf type interesting time to be a gamer

I can see a lot of ps4 consoles going up for sale in the next few months if this turns out to be true and im sure there will also be a price drop for the ps4 also in time for xmas:)

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K.

Yet he says earlier that they haven't even finalised the specs yet.

Uh huh.

You can get slower i5's which would still trounce AMD Jaguar for less than $200 and that's with iGPU that PS4 won't need, they could probably even buy failed i5's and have a triple core processor which would still be much faster. iirc AMD Jaguar is about dual core Pentium territory and that's only when all cores are used, hence most games struggling at 30fps due to low IPC.

GTX970 is $250 and that's with PCB/VRM's/memory etc, Sony only need the GPU by itself. It seems unlikely but then so is a faster CPU and doubly powerful (290X class) GPU from AMD without needing an AIO cooling system?

But they don't use off-the-shelf parts like you're suggesting, everything is specifically designed and manufactured for the console even if it's based on existing architecture.

They wouldn't entirely change the hardware anyway, seeing as they need to maintain 100% compatibility with the existing catalogue of games that have been designed specifically with certain specifications in mind.

No one wants to partner with nVidia given how theyve treated Sony/MS in the past and they seem to have some growing pains (async compute) moving to DX12 after being focussed on DX11 optimisations and as for Intel its just too insignificant to even matter to them (dont think these contracts are that profitable compared to their day to day business)).

Its gonna be an APU or some custom SOC especially if 14nm is involved.

Architecture & dev kits can be confirmed before final spec of the actual console. I remember there were various different specs of dev kit prior to the PS4 being released.

Anyway I don't know how I feel about this. Luckily I don't really play games much these days so whatever happens I don't really mind.

If the GPU is really twice as powerful that's a hell of a lot more grunt they have to play with, and with the consoles being so close to the metal, people are in for a treat graphics wise.

Understandably the CPU doesn't have to be that strong, as we saw with Mantle on PC, when using a low level API, older/weaker CPU's still did very well.

Agreed. It could well be the difference between 30 and 60fps. Seeing as we should have been getting the latter from the get go, I'm not at all happy by this news. I'm still waiting for the PS4 exclusives to arrive ffs!

Yeah, what gives with the complete lack of PS4 exclusives...!

Disappointing that Naughty Dog haven't even got a new game out for the PS4 yet and Sony are already considering a new console.

I assume that all the Sony hardcore going to throw their consoles out the window when the 4.5 can play the games at a higher resolution?! :D

like the ps4's unified ram. You cant go swapping in an i5 and expect it to work, it WILL be a custom part unless sony want a whole world of comparability issues with current ps4 software.

Glad I held out for so long before buying a PS4 now if true.

If not, nice premature April fool's joke. :p

Sony should put these rumours to rest though, I can see many people holding off from buying a PS4.
