PlayStation VR / VR2

I'm doing a demo with Sony tomorrow so I'll get to try it out, really looking forward to it.

Not sure if I'll go down the VR route though as I am currently without a PC and most of the games I enjoy are PC based e.g I'm looking forward to the new Civ, dawn of war etc. I think this is why I don't really use ps4 all that much, plus the PS is hooked up to the main tv in the lounge which is normally being used by my wife or son!

So it's either a new PC or the PSVR and a new tv/monitor so I can set it up somewhere else.

I suspect after you have tried you will be buying psvr :)

Let us know how it goes !

Yeah might well be, I don't want to spend money on a new PC if all the exciting stuff is happening in VR. The PC titles I am interested in are great but the format is decades old after all.

I'll let you know how I get on for sure!

OK so I tried Eve, Drive Club and Battlezone earlier today.

This was at a Sony 'pop up' shop in Bristol. I had to go in, register and select a game listed on the table, I went with EVE to start. I waited for a couple of minutes until I was called over to a demo booth with EVE set up. I sat down, had an explanation of the headset and how to adjust it and then had it calibrated.

Played the first bit of EVE until the part where you get disabled. It was pretty awesome to be fair, I didn't feel totally immersed as I was aware I was being watched by others and the volume of the headset wasn't very loud.

Then I tried Drive Club, smashed round the track using the steering wheel which definitely added to the experience. Drive Club felt quite fuzzy, although this may be because I didn't have the headset properly adjusted?

Battlezone was last to be played, I think this was the best of the three games, felt more like I was actually *there*.

I think all three demos were quite short and worryingly I felt a bit of motion sickness after this short time playing. Hopefully this is just because my body isn't used to this kind of experience, I would be interested to hear from others on this?

Ultimately if I decide to go ahead with VR I would need to be sure I could return it if I couldn't get over the motion sickness thing!

One final note, I am short sighted and have to wear glasses to see objects at a distance, very bizarrely I had to wear my glasses with the VR headset. I would have though that because the unit is only a few inches from my eyes I wouldn't need eyesight correction, not a problem just a bit puzzling, can anyone help explain this?

Cheers

Of the 3 you played Driveclub is actually the worst as it is pretty fuzzy when racing so probablyy not the heatset needing adjusting although it could be as moving the headset up/down on the front can make a difference. It's probably not the game I would choose to show off the VR.

Battlezone as you say is probably the best of the 3 you tried and that's what sold VR to me when I tried it at EGX. If I was showing off VR though I would almost certainly be showing everyone Batman, RIGS, VR Worlds etc etc.

Also dont be worried if you only felt a bit of motion sickness, generally the more you use it the better it gets and using it for short spells over a couple/few days should get you adjusted to it.

I'm not sure of the reasons for glasses but I do know that it says if you usually were glasses then you should use them with the VR. Luckily the VR is designed very well for people who use glasses.

Thanks for that Jase. I've just been reading a bit about VR sickness and hopefully this would pass by slowly increasing exposure.

The glasses thing, can I just say was absolutely not a problem. I found the headset to be extremely comfortable and people wearing glasses was clearly given consideration during the design process.

I've just read that the lenses in the headset mimic seeing into the distance, hence if you normally wear glasses you will still need to wear them for VR. Crazy concept though considering how close the screen is to my eyes yet I still can't see it, the science behind it is fascinating (well maybe to a nerd like me).

I think Battlezone would be my first purchase, I hope there is a decent story element to the game though as I need something more than just 'blow up all the things'.

I thought I would be more about EVE, but Battlezone just seemed the better experience today, perhaps my thoughts about EVE would change when I am in my home environment and am able to relax a bit more into the game and story.

If you're only going to get one game, maybe hold off until you have tried some demos and then make a decision. That should give you a good idea...

I'll probably get a couple to start with, most likely Eve and Battlezone after today. I'm hoping EVE has a decent storyline. I used to love the Freespace games and it took me straight back to this genre.

I'm really looking forward to Resident Evil though, hopefully we'll see some other big titles from big developers in the near future. Robinson and Farpoint look good as well, I'm very interested in the Aim controller.

Why is nobody making a Wing Commander or Mechwarrior for VR?! :(

I think Eve would scratch my Wing Commander itch, but Mechwarrior would be cool, especially if we could get some awesome controller with joysticks on it. Not quite as bonkers as that one they did for the Xbox all those years ago, but something similar perhaps.

I'm very close to buying this based on some of the reviews in here, but i'm not sure if ill get on with VR so with respect to software, which would be the single game you'd order with it to try it out, VR worlds?

Luckily there is a fair few demos available for it so that may actually be enough if you are just wanting to try it. If you are also getting move controllers (or already have them) then I would say certainly pick up Batman, it can be had diitally for £13.99 and although short is worth it for the experience.

Otherwise VR worlds would be a good choice as it has a mix of short games and something for everyone.
