Please Help!! CPU Temp off the charts!!

It really sounds like a hsf problem, as the other person said, set the cpu core manual to 1.32.

Deffo think it's a heatsink problem.

Also, I am now thinking of buying a new heatsink & fan tomorrow & fitting that?

Unless you're overclocking a nw HS/F would be pointless.

It wouldn't hurt getting some AS5 and TIM cleaner to reseat your cooler though.

But like Servo said I can only imagine it's a faulty heatsink.

Or do you think that the default settings on the motherboard are over the top as mentioned earlier as what should be the correct settings?

It won't turn itself off immediately through dodgy settings. Your heatsink isn't fitted properly, or there's something very wrong with your CPU.

Highly unlikely that the chip is damaged. Get some decent thermal paste, clean the CPU and the heatsink with TIM cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and refit, making sure all four pins are snugly in place.

I can only presume it's turning itself off because the cpu is getting too hot.

What I am going to do tomorrow is buy the Arctic freezer pro heatsink & fan & clean off the thermal paste which is already on the cpu & re-apply then fit the new heatsink & fan.

If I still have a problem then my only other option would be to return the cpu under warranty.

Any other recommendations?

Yes, make sure your hs/f is on the board properly. Check that all 4 of the legs have clipped into place all the way. When mines seated properly you can actually see a bit of a bend in the motherboard from the pressure

If one of those legs isnt clipped into place properly it wont be seated well enough.

TAT doesn't work with nForce motherboards. CoreTemp does though. :)

OP: make sure you manually set the voltages in the BIOS. Leaving them on auto gives you more than you need.

Using TAT here with an nForce 680i EVGA motherboard,no problems that i can see?

Just installed the Freezer Pro & had my pc running in bios now for over 1 hour.

The temps have dropped to: -

54 degrees CPU
54 degrees Motherboard.

Do these figures still seem high considering it's a quad core?

I think they are as I am concerned that once I start using the processor the temps will shoot up.

BIOS temps could still be off. Why not boot into windows and download Coretemp to check Core Temperatures direct from the CPU rather than the motherboard's interpretation of Socket Temperature? :)

The fans I have installed are one from the Corsair PSU which is pointing down.
a fan at the rear of the case to expell hot air. 1 fan at the front to bring in cool air. Obviously, the cpu heatsink & fan & a fan on the gpu.

On the fan control in the bios the cpu fan control has an option of q-fan.

What is this & should this be selected?
