Please help. PC restarts when playing any game

Uh? 3v on the 12v rail?!?!

There's your problem!

Could be the program reading it wrong but those voltages look all over the place, check what they say in the BIOS? Should be within 10%+/- of the value.

I suspect the program is reading it wrong - wouldn't even boot if it was that low and if it was dipping that low in windows you'd not get as far as a screenshot of it.

I just tried another program to test my power supply. Strangely, nothing happened and I didn't get a restart. I read that if my power supply was struggling, then this Power Supply test should have caused it to fail.

I also noticed that the voltages under the CPU section also displayed the same unusual ones as in the other program I used from earlier. Could it be that these are in fact correct?

The low FPS are because I highlighted another window, not because the GPU was suddenly struggling.

Although it doesn't mean a lot to me, here are the stats. Hopefully someone else can shed some light: https://i.imgsafe.org/8625c2d.png

Of course, the 2 year warranty expired only a few months ago :(

I haven't done anything to void the warranty - at least I don't think so. I don't know what would to be honest, apart from when looking at the PSU earlier today I saw a "warranty void if broken" sticker, which I didn't touch.

I would strip it to bits.

Use only one memory stick, take out graphics card and set bios to on board.
Remove as much as you can just to get it to boot ie

1 drive
on board graphics
1 stick of ram
PSU
Motherboard.

See if it happens then, also check all connectors are seated properly.

So i've literally been sat here for 12 hours now trying to fix this to no avail.

The most recent things i've tried are:

1. Getting the power supply direct from a wall socket (it has always been on a tower that also includes monitor, steering wheel, stereo etc). That didn't work.

2. Went back to old RAM, ensured that the speed was reset to what it was before (1600hz). That didn't work.

3. Double checked all connections on to motherboard etc were in solidy, which they were. Still get the restart.

In regards to Itchy's post, i'm just tentative about doing anything else because it just feels like I will do more damage. I'm so gutted right now.

Time for bed. If anyone can throw any more ideas my way, i'd be so happy. Enough of this for today.

ONE last thing... I just tried the 3D Mark Fire Strike test, which I used recently to check if my PC was ready for the Oculus Rift (which it just fell short on with a GTX 780).

This Fire Strike demo only lasted about 10 seconds before my PC restarted again as well.

Another thing, I did get Skyrim and iRacing to work for a while (10+ minutes) and these games didn't crash. However, graphics were noticeably poorer, and I was getting visible pop up graphics near the horizons, something that I never used to get before all this trouble started.

Could this mean anything?

Thanks

Did you check Stealthploit's suggestion of CPU temps? Grab CoreTemp and run a CPU stress test (your choice) and tell us what the max temps get to.

I've got CoreTemp - but not exactly sure what you mean by stress test? Is this an option within the program itself, because I couldn't see it?

I have 2 screens, so I was able to have it displayed whilst I loaded a game. But seeing as my system is crashing so quickly when playing a game, the CPU never gets to a worryingly high temperature.

For what it's worth - this is the stats from a second or two before my PC restarts. This is after max 10 seconds of in-play gaming (benchmark test mode - i've given up bothering to actually play myself)

And so the mystery continues. Any more ideas?

No that's very helpful, it means it's probably not the CPU hitting its "shutdown" temperature.

I'm afraid the PSU is pretty likely to be the problem at this point, you will have to swap it out.

This is bizarre... Was the frame rate still smooth? Seeing the GPU usage and clocks during this time would be interesting. Stuff popping in is normally CPU related.

you could try running gpu temp on the second screen and start a game to see if the temps spike....

have you installed new drivers for your gpu recently?

Does sound like psu to be honest tho

Thanks for the reply.

How easy is swapping out a PSU? I've never done it before and there seem to be an awfully lot of cables coming out of my current one. May be difficlut for me to know what wires/cable go where.

Will I be restricted to what Wattage I can get in the new one? If I have to get a new one I will just want to get one better than my current one so this doesn't happen again any time soon. I thought my current PSU was very good - Overclockers themselves told me this when I bought it, as it was a slightly different PSU to the one advertised in my pre-built machine.

In regards to the games that didn't crash, I see that in GPU-Z there is a section called "Sensors" which give readout on GPU Temps etc. Shall I make a video or something of these stats whilst I load Skyrim or iRacing?

Finally, yes, the frame rate was actually very smooth.

Video or screenshots might be useful yep. I asked about smoothness as I was thinking maybe the GPU was struggling to get up to 3D clock speeds, but if it looked smooth then it probably was able to.

you said in op that you got the pc in december 2014 you have a 2 year warrenty according to the spec you posted so you should have like over 7 months left.
