Please place the item in the bagging area.

Also, i saw a women with an entire trolley full of toilet roll, instantly thought of south park but also wtf!?! !?

Special offer? Discount coupons?Hotel/restaurant ran out?
Everyone Always needs bog roll and it's usually cheaper to buy in bulk.
get some funny looks from time to time tho :p

They tend to mess up quite often. I've got quite a lot of "buy one get 1 free" where it's scanned but told me to remove the item from bagging area. Hate the things but I see the errors as some sort of compensation for the inconvenience. :p

Last time I used one of these I ended up trying to scan the wrong barcode on a box and looked like somewhat of an idiot. Not my fault there's two barcodes though.

Equally annoying is when you get the bags at the till that just refuse to let you open them and stick together holding everyone up. Might start throwing the items in the trolley and bag them when I get back to the car :p.

I hope in the future there will be machines where you type your shopping list into and the machine comes out of it's box all robot style and then goes and does the shop for you.

...and then scans it for you!

They do not work for old people - I watched a group of skool kids scan stuff through and thought - will do that on way out.

First scan red light - woman comes ok's whisky - second scan same only lighter fuel - third scan Brandy - fourth scan wine - - I said can't you tell it it's an old man and let it all through- Sorry sir - we have to confirm your age.

Hate them.

Dave

You're supposed to scan both items separately and then the free one is discounted at the end.

As far as I can tell, the majority of problems are caused by the idiocy of the users. I rarely have any issues with them, and if I do, it's because I've not done what it's told me to.

^^^ this ^^^

I go through them no probs

i avoid self service if i can... i try to make use of the people ASDA employ that are so utterly useless all they do is hold a "Space Here" sign up.

they bug me more when they cant find a space yet there is an un manned checkout... why are they being paid to wave around a green finger?

I have no issue with self checkout i actually prefer it if i have a couple of things but my main 2 gripes are

Buying age restricted products= yep fair enough the machine cant tell if Iam old enough and it needs human intervention, no problem there but, why oh why does it need to shout out "APPROVAL NEEDED" or something to that effect on every age restricted item bought ffs, If I buy a few bottles of cider for the weekend or a party it shouts it out every dam time. why can't it say it once and then when you are done just alert the operator?

People who take an entire trolley load to the self checkout= seriously you are wasting your own time and everyone elses!!

People have a fear of these machines. In my local Tesco, there will be a queue about 10 deep and the self service machines are vacant.

All the better for people like me who can go straight to self service, saving a load of time :D

Something like that would be possible even now (we already have automated warehouse picker bots) but probably wouldn't be economically viable over conventional stores. Go to a hole in the wall, select your items and wait while picker bots select the item and place it into a container for you to take. It'd just be like a massive vending machine. Hell, you could just do it over the Internet and then just go and collect it from the nearest dispenser. No doubt Tesco will bring it out within the next 10 years and call it Tesco Anytime. :p

slightly on the topic in a local tesco they have hand held scanners so you can scan as you shop and skip the checkout process alltogether... not sure how it works if you change your mind on an item though?

seems a good idea but surely its open to abuse on both ends?

What I've noticed is at least two of the three main supermarkets (Tesco/Sainsbury's/Asda) self-checkouts use the same voice, like they all have a contract with the same software vendor?

More likely even the same checkout manufacturer.

lol :)

What amuses me are the people who put their items in on the bagging area and then after they've paid bag it up, they could have bagged it as they go and saved time :p

No we cant :(, well not if you use your own bag, as it needs authentication. So its usually faster just to bag afterwards. Maybe if you use your own plastic bags, but with rucksacks it always needs authentication.

And perhaps there was an offer on the bog roll, not like it goes out of date or wont be needed in the future,
