Plus-sized traveler demands free seats

Does make you think. I think for health and safety reasons people over a certain weight should be banned from flying. not Only do they effect others passengers but they are not going to be easy to evacuate in an emergency

however as balance they could set up a rival company that has special modified planes that have enlarged seats for this sort of circumstances . Maybe they can name them something like mammoth airlines or Along those lines

or maybe just have modified planes just for just this reason.
where would you draw the line?
just make extreme obese people pay for 2 seats........ i see your point about them evacuating but then the same is true of disabled people and you would not (i assume) stop them from flying... the reality is in a crash you leave them till last - not out of spite but because you could rescue one of them or probably get half a dozen others out in the same time.

as an over weight person myself (hence the helicopter story above) but who has no issue flying other than legroom (i am over 6 foot 2) and loads of us struggle there, the notion of banning from flying based on say BMI i disagree with.
 
How about we get rid of seats altogether and just cram as much people in as possible so no one can move or complain about fat rolling over them, problem solved?

so in the event of turbulence the whole inside of the plane becomes like a pinball game but with multiple humans as being the pinballs

We are measured for offshore helicopter travel. There was a chopper crash a few years ago, and a couple of deaths were caused by someone not being able to fit through an escape exit.

I could certainly see someone that size causing issues (ie delaying it) during an emergency evacuation.

Yup. We had the same and probably as a result of the same crash.
Rules for us were fatties were in the aisle in the same area of the cabin to allow everyone the best chance of escape.
 
Tbh if we had sleep pods instead of seats we could possible triple the number of passengers and it could even function a bit like those robotic parking garages where you just get in at the terminal then slotted into the airplane... hmm. Fatties can go in the XL pods and get slotted onto exterior-definitely-not-malfunctioning-bays-that-absolutely-cannot-be-ejected-to-save-weight.

However, being 100KG man of about 195cm and not overweight, I do concur that they really do need some larger seats in economy. I've been long-haul once. Never again. Drives my GF mad that I won't and basically don't like going on holiday even short-haul because of it.

Buying two seats wouldn't really help. Sometimes getting the seats with extra leg-room does, but not all of the time and sometimes they're not available. Once I paid more for extra leg-room on a 747 to be confronted by sitting in front of a baby changer which was in constant use most of the time.

I'm average weight and average height, and even I can find the economy seats a bit of a squeeze for legroom.

Problem is, we all love cheap flights, and if they have to reduce the number of seats on a plane to give more leg room, it'll mean the costs going up.
 
I think @dowie made a good point in the op. Should tall people get discounts too? There would be a stronger case for tall disability.

If being large to the point of needing two seats then this could only be enforced if it was considered a disability. Because ultimately the government's would be ordering the airline to make less profit in order to give away a free seat.

I've only flown transatlantic, not on the budget airlines. I have to have oxygen during the flight. Though I never asked for two seats they always seemed to sit me with no one sat next to me, or upgraded me to first class. But I think on those flights the plane is hardly ever totally full. So maybe it's the budget airlines that are struggling?

Not so much post COVID most airlines are not running the same amount of flights and some routes never came back. Which means transatlantic flights are nealy always almost full (at least the last few times I've been on one)

This also means the cost has risen business used to cost me ~2k now it's almost that for premium economy and business is 4/5k

Internal flights are still reasonable
