Plusnet Discussion Thread

Full 76mb, unlimited usage, 18 month contract. Not sure what they are like though, I've always been with plus net but buying my own house soon so looking into the best options

Plusnet is slightly cheaper. Don't forget cashback, quidco or topcashback.

I joined plusnet in Jan 2016

I signed for an 18month contract - I got email on 15th July stating line rental is increasing from 16.99 to 17.99 from 1st Sept

Can I get out of contract?
Or negotiate a new deal?
Will I lose my Cashback?

Cheers

Can I get out of contract? Yes. Use price increase as excuse
Or negotiate a new deal? They may offer a deal to get you to stay
Will I lose my Cashback? Not sure but would be surprised if you did

Cheers

Although all of the providers will presumably be adjusting their rental charges in line with the Openreach increase they don't have to. It's their commercial decision about how much they want to mark-up they want on what Openreach charges them (significantly less than £17.99).

Openreach have been reducing the line rental for a few years, it is around £10 a month they charge the ISPs. ISPs are moving the increases to line rental so they can maintain the attention grabbing Fibre/DSL prices.

Line rental is set by Openreach, all providers will have to increase it.
Not the case. Line rental charges from Openreach have barely increased at all.

Sadly, this is correct. And when one company does it, everyone else will follow suit. Because they can. BT have around 6 million broadband customers and, I'd guess/estimate probably another 5-6 million phone only customers. Even a £1 rise is an extra £12m a month.

I was having trouble with my Asus N66U so decided to try out a VR900. All plugged in and working fine but the line stats seem a bit out. These are the dsl stats from the VR900:

Current Rate(kbps): 19999 | 74222

However, all my speed tests come in at about 59 Mb/s. When I first joined PN in 2013 I was getting almost the full 80 Mb/s and when I've query the drop I just get told that's all my line can handle now.

How reliable are these stats from the VR900?

Check what IP profile BT have for your connection by running this test, you need to go through to the further diagnostic section for the details.

http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

Then check what speed Plusnet have on your account using this link

https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed

It may be Plusnet's line profile has not updated to the increased sync speed, if it is lower than BT's profile you can ask them to raise it manually.

I've done all that and my speeds today are back up to 73 Mb/s.

It's really annoying cos I've been talking to PN about this for over a year and always been told that it's normal to drop from 77 Mb/s to 60 Mb/s due to too many connections in my area. As long as it stays around 73 Mb/s I'll be a happy chappy.

Hmm, mine is set to 67 Mb/s with the estimated speed as 80 Mb/s (may vary down to 70 Mb/s at peak times). Last time I pestered them about the slow sync speed they said there was nothing they could do as it was within the estimated range...clearly not!

EDIT: Supposedly my exchange had an issue recently and they have reset my line statistics (for the third time I think) and told me I should expect 80 Mb/s when I reboot my router. We shall see, I am very sceptical.

I've received the email as well detailing the slight price increase, I'm trying to figure out if I can get a better deal? I've been with Plusnet for just over 24 months and have never had a problem, however I would be prepared to leave if I can get the same level of service and save a few £££ seeing as I'm out of contract.

My Current Package
Plusnet Unlimited Fibre - £19.99
Anytime Call Package - £6.00
Plusnet Line Rental - £16.99
Total: £42.98

Any advice?

Hmm.....so, price hike, still takes ages to get through on phone.
Still not getting full speed i was told i'd get. Like others i was told there was an issue at the exchange (just standard BS) and that they would 'set' my line at 80/20.
I download at about 6MBps tops, which is fair enough i guess considering contention. However it very often dips way way lower than that.
Not really impressed with them tbh.
They'll be getting a call...if they ever answer the frikkin phone about reviewing my tariff.

Just got the email as well. Offered me £5 off the price I currently pay for the next 18 months if I sign up for a new contract. As the service has been fairly reasonable for the first 18 months, snapped it up as a nice little saving :)

Took the opportunity to get out of my contract with the price increase e-mail. Recently home moved to a new address and resigned for 2 years. Don't really get the benefit of the connection where I am so seemed a waste to pay £30/month.

Been with PN for over 4 years and can't fault them. Home moved a few times without issue, service has been reliable. Retentions staff were a bit pushy and tried to talk over me, but I'll probably go back as a new customer in the future. Some of their offers for new customers are pretty good tbf.

Who do I need to speak to at Plusnet to resign and hopefully get a similar discount?
