Plusnet

I was with them for a couple of months before I left after they tried to force a change of the terms and conditions of their users without giving them the proper timeframe to accept or reject. After many threats of legal action by many users, they let us out of our contracts. Suffice to say I wouldn't go back to them if you paid me.

Really? I've been here a decade and I've no recollection of any T's & C's change that didn't come with the obligatory 30 day notice period

AskSam states our exchange is the Newport Savoy.

Which is 21CN enabled so I can uncap your upload if you like (just drop me a private message with your account username if you'd like me to)? It doesn't cost anything.

Best regards,

Not really happy with Plusnet. Sometimes they can be good, but I've had lots of problems with video streaming - sometimes the browsing would be fine, but streaming a video would be impossible. Very slow at peak times (say between 6PM and 8PM) and also very unreliable. I am regularly finding my connection has dropped and I need to reboot my router. Lately I've also been suffering regular lag spikes while playing games online, so I'm thinking of switching to Be* Unlimited (I hear some good things about them and as I'm thinking about subscribing to Netflix, an unlimited service would be preferable).

I'm on the Gravesend exchange, which is at the end of my road. Think the line distance was measured at only 300 metres but I still don't get as quick a service as I would have thought.

There was a huge uproar on their forums at the time, with many MANY people up in arms about it.

We're definitely going back a fair few years. Can't remember quite how long ago it was, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was close to a decade ago (doesn't time fly!) that it all happened. I've been with VM for at least 4 years now, and I'm fairly sure it was at least a few years before that. I feel old :D

Are you connected to a telephone cabinet?

All of the posts in our forums are still visible. We archived the old ones and imported them to the new forums when they were launched. The posts go back to ~2003.

If the T's & C's change concerned dial-up services then it pre-dates my time here. I'd be surprised if it was broadband specific and I didn't know about it. Regardless, if it was that long ago I suppose it's not of much relevance any more.

Edit: Just realised there were forums prior to 2003 too.

Then something's definitely amiss. Have you ever reported it to our helpdesk? If you message me your username then I'll take a quick look at your account if you want to see if I can spot anything untoward?

Best regards,

Your name rings a bell, so I get the feeling it was after you started. I've been googling around, and I reckon I was probably a customer back in 2004 or 2005. Whenever you originally got the Ellacoya hardware.

Interestingly, those forum posts you linked have no posts from me in there that I could see, and I was a fairly active poster in the time I was there, so I'd suggest that what's there is a *massaged* version ;)

As you say though, it was a long time ago, and while I wouldn't recommend Plusnet personally (trust, once lost, hard to regain), nothing stopping other people :)

Best regards,

I did report a generally poor service a while ago relating to video streaming, after finding someone else reporting it on the Plusnet forums. I think someone did change something on my account which improved things but I still find disconnections a problem and in game lag prevalent. Unfortunately I've been too busy lately to log any problems I have or try and establish a pattern for disconnections.

I am with them. They are very cheap and the rare times I have had to call them they have been very helpful.

My speeds are pretty slow where I am but my ping and latency are fantastic for gaming. 11 max on UK BF3 servers.

Nah, it's not. I was quite closely involved in the export/import of the threads from the old phpBB forums.

Fair enough. Offer still stands if you want me to take a quick look over your account at any point.

As in, just: 45334390 ?

Was trying to find something on the list from when a question was raised before, but all I can find is payment references.

I'm also just looking at your Fibre packages - Extra Fibre Broadband + calls looks tempting, and for the same price that Be* will do a non-fibre (albeit, unlimited) package.

Looks pretty stable of late checking your RADIUS logs, there have been a few drops over the last fortnight or so though:

Code:
Session Started	Session Ended	Session Duration
09:01 13/Aug/2012	N/A 7 Days, 7:45:19 (on going)
21:52 11/Aug/2012	09:00 13/Aug/2012 One Day, 11:7:43

15:21 30/Jul/2012	11:15 02/Aug/2012 2 Days, 19:53:48

Your line profile's a healthy 12480kbps.

Might be worth trying a wired rather than wireless connection if you're using one. Running an extended ping to the router from a command line and leaving it running in the background can also help identify if there's a wi-fi issue.

Code:
ping 192.168.1.254 -t

(That's assuming you're using one of our routers, the IP is likely to be that or 192.168.1.1 either way).

Refer to it when you're having problems and see what the response times are like. If they're high then it's worth trying different wireless channels to see if there's any improvement. You can stop the ping using CTRL and 'C' at any point.

I can't see any obvious reason why video streaming would be problematic

Your upload's capped at 448kbps at the moment. That cap can be lifted on request to up to 1.3Mbps.

Kind regards,

I have actually been trying a wired network lately. My PC is connected to my router by WiFi, but a friend recently leant me a set of these as I prefer to be wired physically if I can. They've been pretty good but I've been noticing a lot of lag in games lately, so I've gone back to using the WiFi connection to see if it was a result of using coax over powerline.

My line connection is often good, about 13000kbps as you say, but online speed tests are often only 6-7mbps. I might run a few more tonight to see if things have improved.

Im using a Netgear DG834 router. Although I have a Plusnet supplied router, I've stopped using it as it's made by Thomson, which means playing Steam games is impossible (well known issue apparently).

To be fair, the video streaming has been a lot better as of late, so I am going to keep a closer eye on my line speeds.

Thanks for the help.

Similar to the ones I use (mine are a bit cheaper/nastier though ;))

Odd, I never had problems although some of the older kit we shipped did cause some people problems using PSN/XBL.
