Thanks for the advice mate. I have got myself a job for now and will have plenty of cash put by, and I'm very good with my finances so will budget very carefully.

I'm not a massive drinker which is good 'cos i think that's where a lot of student funds take a beating! lol.

No but seriously, what would you consider the top 3 expenses other than rent?

Cheers

P.S How difficult is the Computer Systems and Networks course? Is it enjoyable?

I graduated 5 years ago and even back then course being offered to freshers was far different to the course I was on. So I can't really comment on what it's like now. I enjoyed it though and it's got me where I am today, working in New York as a System Engineer on projects totalling about £500m :)

And you enjoy your job i'm guessing!? It really interests me and I'm very much looking forward to furthering my knowledge. Would you consider it worth specialising in one particular area? For example, network security?

Excellent, thanks for your help everyone.

I'm going to be studying 'Computer Systems & Networks' starting in September.

Pfft lucky you, a year of that was enough for me, was nothing like I expected and nothing like they said it was. Much happier after I moved courses.

If I decide to go in halls would you recommend a standard or en suite room? The en suite are around £90 a week, which isn't a problem, but is it worth it?

I will taking my car with me becuase I definately want the ability to get around! I was informed that Plymouth don't provide you with parking at the uni, so are there plenty of places to park? I presume that just on the side of the road will be ok. I can't see anyone stealing my car to be honest there's plenty better things to steal! lol.

Parking is a NIGHTMARE - seriously. If you go in Halls forget taking your car, you won't park anywhere.

ALL the parking is restricted - some of it is residents only all day (Most of the stuff around the halls and no, living in Halls does not entitle you to a residents permit), some of it is Max Stay 1-2 hours which is fine for lectures but as you get further from the Uni towards Mutley etc it's only residents parking between 10am and 11am or 2-3 etc to stop all day parking but means its fine for uni parking. But not for long periods.

Only way to bring a car, really, is to rent a house and apply for a proper permit.

I've heard really bad things about Chris Storey, so if you're going to look at accommodation, use the university's accommodation office, as they're apparently quite good for identifying good houses.

My mates whinge about Chris Storey on a regular basis :(

Also, Fox - what year/course are you in?

Just finished 2nd year of Business :) Did do first year of CSN hence a year behind but it was... rubbish, so I swapped.

Pfff, I love cooking. Lol, we'll have a little gathering of OcUK Plymouth students here soon :p
Aye, ill be going to plymouth uni next year also :D Studying Communications Engineering. Though they said that in the first year you do exactly the same modules as Computer Systems Engineering so give the oppertunity to switch course.
Havent applied for accomodaion yet but looking at the Pilgrim halls.

So he's just finished his placement, or he's on Admin and has finished totally?

Just done his final exams. He didn't do a placement year.

I think his course is business at least... :o

Business and accountancy or something like that... :/

You'll probably be ok now, they've just had a 'clear out' (;)) of the 'older' lecturers, and quite a few from the computing dept are now gone. Which means you won't have to hear stories of computing in the 70's, and Australia...

Mutley isn't bad, although it's gone downhill in the last few years (I lived in Mutley most years since I came down here in 1997), mainly because many of the houses have been turned into flats and filled with scagheads on benefits...

I did Chemistry with Computing when I was there, good times :)

If you've got a group, the best thing to do is get yourself down here and get around the letting agents. I had a lot of luck with a company called Cotehele properties (assuming they are still letting) as a student :)

The actual uni student accomadation I could take or leave. (was in Robbins in the first year, expensive, tiny and annoying).

Hi Guys,

After doing my A-levels I decided not to join CSN straight away and instead went for a FdSc in Computer Networking at Cornwall College. This two year course gave me a FdSc and also then let me join the final year of the CSN course at Plymouth.

Joining Plymouth in the final year was strange since I was coming into the fourth year of the CSN course, however the University is great and the course was also really good.

I have two more exams to do (one tomorrow and one friday) and then thats me done :D

Following my BSc (Hons) at plymouth i am planning to go back in september to begin a MSc in Network Systems Engineering.

I didn't live in Plymouth during my time there since I commuted from bodmin each day on the train, so I can't comment on the accommodation but can say that the Uni itself is very good and hopefully you'll enjoy it.

P.S: I can't imagine either who your are referring to when you mention the australia comments ;) I had him as my project supervisor for my final year project :)

I'm looking at the documentation for Alexandra Works. It clearly states here that there is a one of utility charge of £250 which is to be paid with the first installment of rent.

I've just spoke to my girlfriend and she says that she's phoned them up and that there is in fact, no utility charge?

Does anyone know anything about this as I presume that charges would be the same accross all of the UNITE properties?

With mine, I paid £250 deposit at the start of the year along with my first payment of rent. The utilities are part of your rent. You're getting your deposit and utility charges mixed up.

Ah no it's ok I've spoken to UNITE and it's been sorted out.

Turns out they print the same form for every one of their buildling throughout the country and the utlity charge only applies to some of them.

So I only need to pay my security deposit.

Out of interest how much was the first installment of rent and how are you paying, 3 or 8 installments?
