Pod coffee machine for ~£100

How is the gaggia gran coffee machine? does pods and fresh ground by the looks of it. Studio have it reduced to £99 with an extra 10% off if ordered now, is that a good price or about average?

edit.

found it already in john lewis for £69, might give it a bash.

Those dual-purpose espresso machines are usually designed for ground coffee first, pods 2nd. They basically take a regular home espresso machine and create a filter basket for it which will fit the ESE pods. A nice easy implementation for the manufacturer but it doesn't mean the machine is designed for pod use - just that it will allow their use.

I expect a machine designed purely for pods will be better at producing pod-based drinks so consider how you will be using the machine.

The pods themselves look like disc shaped tea bags so aren't vacuum sealed but the outer packaging may be. On the plus side, there is a huge range.

Nespresso capsules are made from aluminium and are individually vacuum sealed. They only work in Nespresso machines.

The machine you mentioned can only use ESE pods. ESE pods aren't limited to a single supplier like Nespresso (and others) hence the large range of ESE pods available. The pod itself looks like a round teabag i.e. coffee packaged in perforated paper. The pod replaces having to measure and tamp ground coffee but still uses a filter basket so the rest of the brewing process is the same.

agree. thaats my most preferred machine. shame about the amount of washing you need to do afterward :D (thats where the wife usually comes in:D)

Personally, I've decided to go with the Lattissima Plus (Nespresso) for ultra convenience and the ability to steam milk with as little mess/cleaning as possible. It costs about £200 right now but as someone else mentioned, there's £70 of Nespresso credit on offer right now.

I'll be interested to know how that goes - did some research a couple of months ago and decided to go with that. Just waiting for my kitchen to be finished and then will be buying.

I'm also going to be getting the same machine, just seeing if between now and the end of the coffee offer I can get it cheaper, though £190-200 isn't so bad, especially if I'm not having to pay for any coffee. :p

got one too :D That milk jug fits nicely in the fridge door, and goes in the dishwasher about twice a week. No hassle.

It is good, it gets used every day whereas with a proper bean machine I'd only bother at the weekend.

Make sure you keep an eye on claiming the voucher card thing - they tried fobbing me off by claiming that I bought the machine out of date etc (I didn't). I did get it in the end, after a few emails.

Sure thing but as you already know the reviews are generally good and there are a number of videos knocking around on YouTube.

I had the same plan but judging by its price history on Amazon, any drop in price may not be worth waiting for. It could even go back up a bit. Another reason why I think the price may not drop much further is that they have plenty other models to fill the £100-£200 price bracket (Pixie, Citiz, Essenza and U) and their parent company (Nestle) also owns the Dolce Gusto brand which fills the sub-£100 price bracket.

It's gone through 2 Christmas periods already without dropping below £200 although even I got to admit past prices can be meaningless.

It's a bit misleading showing pictures of 4 glasses on their own then! I gave JL a call and even they thought it came included judging by the pics, but I'm getting them to double-check.

I have a feeling the pics are of an old offer or something and haven't been updated.
