Pod coffee machine for ~£100

I've a proper espresso machine and to be honest its such a pain that it only gets used at weekends. When I'm making breakfast in the morning I only have 5-10 min before I need to leave, a pod machine would be ideal. Instead if I wanted a cappuccino it could easily take 10min for the machine to heat up, froth the milk, pour the shot, empty the tamp, give the milk jug a quick rinse, wipe the old grind from the machine.

The thought of a pod that I can just pop in and have tasty coffee make me jealous usually I just wait till I'm in the office and have some of the filter coffee.

fair enough - the op hasn't said why they want pods tho!
I guess I am used to the routine for making a coffee and just see it as part of making a nice coffee

I wasn't detracting from the art of making good coffee, or the fact you will get a better cup and can use whatever beans you like, its just that in terms of speed its not always ideal.

next one up is Tassimo T55, i like how costa and starbucks (at the time, but now they switched) makes pods for them. might just be brand effect but clients and visitor are often find them quite posh. bigger sized coffee definitely taste above-average. espresso is not so great. i think it's down to the pressure (less than 15 bar+ used in other machines). and it splashed everywhere when it makes foamy drinks. they also offer a better milk pods, taste abit creamy-ish (which some people don't like). strangely, the tassimo is the only one that ever jammed out of the lot. but it was no big deal, just pull the plug and empty the whole lot and start again.

I'd actually forgotten about this when I made my previous post about the different systems. The Tassimo system was the first I used and it did frequently jam up, in-paticular the foil from the pod where it is pierced seems to get stuck and jammed up, plus one of the machines outright failed and you frequently got coffee going everywhere, like its failing to come out of the pod properly. I'm sure they have probably addressed this better now.

at one point we actually rented one of those commerical version of nespresso machine. it uses coffee discs rather than pods. to me, the taste is the same. i think they re-dsign the pod to be a disc so in a busy environment, the waste is more compacted. but given the cost, i dont think it's worth it. i much rather buy a couple of cheapish ones from the normal range and use the pods.

I've seen those now in a few hotels. The staff would make drinks, but given they were on the floor of the buffet restaurant. you could do it yourself. The buttons and everything all looked the same, but then I noticed it used some completely different kind of pod.

Does it have the same range of coffees as the normal Nespresso pods?
I also wondered if they were any easier to recycle perhaps? As with existing pods, if you actually want to recycle them you either have to take them to a Nespresso store, or you can now buy a device that will empty the grounds and crush the pod, but its quite pricey.

yep, some how when it jams, it thinks it's good idea to pump more hot water through until there is none, lol. :D so now we have a metal baking tray for it to sit in. :D

the milk pod sometimes doesn't empty out properly either, so when you put the second pod in, it floods the bar code scanner and doesnt register the bar code.

oh, i guess another down side is that, the pods are HOT when they are done. and unlike other machines, the used disc has to be manually emptied out. can be dangerous if not cautious. we actually at one point want to get rid of it because it's health and safety risk. but people in office agreed this is now an accepted risk and will not let visitors/client use it without provision, lol :D

yep, i have seen it in quite a few hotels too. i guess they are much quickier and does have certain level of quality.

the range is actually smaller, espcially some of fancier ones are not offered by the disc version. i think the disc contains slightly more grounds tho. it tastes just tiny bit stronger than the normal one. (i havent done a side by side, so i cant say for sure)

not sure how recycleable it is. the normal pods are nicely made out of aluminium with a foil lit, so minimal plastic is involved. the disc are made out of plastic/aluminium foil layers and is punched through by 100+ needles (abit like the normal one that put holes on the foil, these ones just have even more holes), so im not sure if it is any good when it comes to recycle. nespresso does offer collecting them back, but our people just bin them when the internal collector is full.

Good deal on tassimo right now. I love mine, we buy in a load of pods at a time from tassimo online.

Hardly every get problems with the pods, as long as you push down then clamp it goes in straight, the only time i've seen it spit the whole lot out is when somebody has clamped twice and its put a hole in the wrong place

I've seen Nespresso machine used in the kicthens of a lot of high end restaurants, Ive never seen a tassimo or seseo machine used.

Id take a coffee made by a proper machine by some one that knows what they are doing over nespresso anytime, but i dont know what im doing and dont have time in the morning to grind beans and clean a machine ; i bought the cheapest nespresso machine and their milk frother - its great.

I've had my Tassimo T65 a few years now, still use it regularly and it works great. The discs aren't horribly expensive though if you're going to use it like a coffee machine e.g. several drinks a day then it'll soon get costly. I probably use mine every other day on average.

The Starbucks discs being discontinued a while back was a bit of a sore loss as they were definitely the best, but the Costa ones are pretty good and they've got a decent range of them now.

One piece of advice I would give with the Tassimo is to keep the cleaning disc handy and use it after every few drinks to keep the nozzle and piercer unit clean. It'll still need to be removed and properly cleaned every so often but running the cleaning disc takes 30 seconds and just helps to stop it getting clogged. Also means your drinks don't end up with old dried bits of coffee in them.

That's not really a surprise though; Nespresso has always been the one with presence in the professional/business market, the others are just home machines.

Thread might be over but I've got two machines, one in the kitchen and one in the office. Two friends also have them after I got my first and they're great.

Debenhams had one down to £60 a few months ago in the Blue Cross sale. That also came with £40 of credit for pods so the machine was only £20 which is an absolute bargain - I bought one as a wedding present (with gift cards that made it half price :p).

Just bought a nespresso! Lookin forward to it coming. Got it on the bay for £75 its a u pure? Bought some coffee too so we'll see what its like. I do enjoy grinding beans and loading the French press up. But it is a lot of faffing about. Drink instant at work every day, so I'd deffo not say I'm some sorta coffee snob. Hopefully I like it!

pumped espresso (e.g. gaggia) ... better than
aeropress ...better than
nespresso... better than
tassimo ... about the same as
senseo
.

Just looked for the aeropress.
Is it really as simple as it looks? Just seems to be an oversized 'syringe'?
I assume it works weel due to the force required to squeeze it?

Came into this thread too as also looking at various machines. Is the Latissima as good as anything at the price range if i want something that can do a variety of coffees, from small espresso to larger cappachinos etc?
Much as i would love to get a full bean to cup, i know the mess and hassle would mean i just don't use it.

Had a Krups Nespresso for 2 years now never a problem. Only problem I find is the capsules are a bit expensive for daily use. But for proper espresso in 10 secs they really are super.

I got my one today. Kinda amazed it doesnt need to boil the water and it kinda does it instantly!
Now my(silly) question is, im not much of an espresso drinker, but the amount of coffee that comes out is tiny! like we're talking mouthful here. I take it you're obviously meant to have milk with it. Heated up milk in the microwave and it was pretty damn good! 10/10 for convenience.

I think it's the "Lungo" option you want Kobi. Use it with Lungo capsules which take into account the extra water used.

Even that won't be the same volume as a typical mug of instant coffee.

Edit: beaten to it.

we grabbed a Dolce Gusto last xmas reduced in argos.
We've had a good selection of different drinks and they've all been decent.

I would however change if buying now, I'd grab one that I can get a coffee duck for too.

If anyone is still looking for a machine now would be a good time to buy a Nespresso as from today until end of January 2014 they have started doing the coffee voucher offer again.

£40 voucher if you buy a standard machine.
£70 voucher if you buy a machine that has milk capabilities. ie Latissima or Bundled with an Aeroccino

Excellent - although it might be worth waiting until Boxing Day / January sales.

I still struggle to tell the difference between some of the machines.

What are the pros/cons of say getting the U & Milk vs one with a milk tank like the Latissima?

House of Fraser also had 10% off all Nespresso machines today and yesterday, sure similar offers will be on there and other places on the run up to Christmas.

@ Kobi - Holding the buttons down also manually sets a volume. At least you can do that with both of ours.
