podcasts

I certainly do, but they were sponsored by The Guardian, and hosting was provided by positive internet, then he saw another way to milk money, like bloody flanimals.

The stuff he makes is funny, but I can't help but feel he's not in it for the passion of comedy, just money.

It was awesome when it was free, and I couldn't wait to listen to the newest one, when he started charging, I stopped, as I'm sure a lot of other people did, I'd be interested to see the growth rate before and after the fee.

Funnily enough you've posted 2 other companies. Both of which have to make a profit. And when millions of people download 30mb each it costs tens of thousands of pounds.

And all the video podcasts are free. As are the latest 3 podcasts. He hardly rips us all off. He's stopped doing podcasts for a while anyway after this christmas one so he's hardly making a killing on it. He would carry on if he did.

Both were getting free advertising out of it though, and The Guardian and/or Ricky himself could have struck a deal with positive internet, hosting for such high amounts of bandwidth doesn't cost the same amount as a package offering x amount times x

I'm sure both could have easily afforded it to give something back to the fans like they did at first, especially if they've stopped doing them now, and it was great then, but having to pay for it sort of takes away that edge they had, they would never of become the most downloaded podcast had they charged from the start, in my opinion of course.

It just makes me think he's a bit greedy considering the money he's made off us for all his other stuff, it takes away the pleasure of his material knowing that he's just in it for the money.

All I'll say is that for the sound quality I hear from an iPod versus an MP3 player of 3/4 the cost, there's no way in hell I'll ever buy an iPod......

This, BTW, is using the exact same file and the exact same headphones.

Did you use the equalizer on the iPod? it doesn't sound that great using flat.

But let's try and get back onto the podcast rail instead of going on an iPod bashing one, hey

Or use it as a reference or add further infomation to the post, you seem to be really angry you thought I was correcting you, you're being defensive again :)

Is ACC set as your "Import using" format?

It's always imported them as .mp3 for me, from a folder or otherwise, been a while since I've imported anything ACC though, might have changed at some point.

I'm not angry, it just seems really weird when someone quotes you, to then recorrect you as if they haven't even read what you've wrote.

Yes it's set to ACC format, as thats the default setting. I only ever experienced this once though, as had a wmv file that I used as a sign in sound for MirandaIM in my music folder once. I rip all my CDs using EAC and Lame 192 VBR so I've never had any conversion ever since.

are you trying to justify recently spending a large amount of money on an ipod by any chance? ;)
I spent 145 pounds or so for my 30GB iPod.

Nothing comes close for that price, god bless the American tax.

@MickeyD
Absolutely nothing wrong with the iPod sound quality, either you were listening to a borked iPod, or you haven't heard a Fifth Gen  (Or you had a crappy EQ on)

I've found Headphones have a huge effect on my iPod, the ones that come with it sound terrible compared to the Sony ones I picked up.

I spent 100 on mine, god bless leaving ASDA and blowing 75 pounds worth of starpoints and 10% discount on one :D

I apologise if I upset or offended you in any way then, no hard feelings? :D

Nope, bought mine years ago when Mk2 came out, then got it upgraded to a Mk3 for free.

Just don't want to see another thread derail into "omfg apple/ipod sux!!!" when it's meant to be about our favourite podcasts.

I spent $19.95 on an mp3 player..... ;)

Granted, it was only 256mb, no LCD display, only 6 buttons on it, and it ONLY took mp3 format. But hey, it worked (until my son got a hold of it anyways).

Iirc both Karl and Steve wanted to charge from the start. Ricky said no but by the second season he had to change his mind because of the high cost of hosting.

I don't think he's in it for the money. There was never a wish by him to make money at the start so why did he do a podcast at all?

And in any case, even if he is in it for the money, so what? It's still not exactly dear and it's a fine show.

Also, Karl was (at least at the time of making the podcasts) out of work, so it's not all just a case of Gervais being greedy.

If there are people who really do begrudge paying a couple of quid for the podcasts, his earlier XFM shows are pretty easy to find on the net for free.

tbh, i don't see why people are getting so defensive. no need for it.

Because you're talking playground crap.

IPODs have ALWAYS played MP3's from Gen 1 players.

Once again for those that can't grasp it.
Many players allow drag and drop straight from windows with no other software.
IPOD's require you to drag and drop using ITunes or other 3rd party software.
IPOD's require the tags that you put inside your MP3's to work properly.
You can drag an untagged MP3 to the IPOD but it will probably end up in Artist: Album and you don't want 1000s of files all in one place.
Therefore you tag your MP3's with at least the Artist and Album name and the IPOD's read that information.
You can also put year, genre and a host of other things about the album and the IPOD will be able to sort in a database fashion.
Other players will also read this tag information.
The MP3's are not changed into anything else.

For those who are still thinking it converts them, it doesn't. In fact, here is a screenshot. My iTunes handles a few different formats and this is the format it is happy to play it in. It also has the same extension when on the iPod so it does, indeed, play .mp3. I don't understand why some people are so sceptical and find it so hard to understand?

Crazy.

Much like dmpoole eluded to, the format is not changed whatsoever. I can't believe how many times this must have come up and in every circumstance form someone who doesn't own one and merely goes on hearsay, yet continues to defend their ill informed knowledge.

edit - don't comment on the choice of music ;) it was the last day our house would be together and my housemates had a Christmas celebration and wanted some music :)

your ears are broken... i have a degree in sound production and work in a studio most days.. listin to my ipod all the time because its far superior ( in sound quality) to almost any other mp3 player ive owned and listined too!

must have encloded your mp3s with a dodgy codec.. i find some of my older mp3s suffer from poor quailty... mainly the ones i converted on my p1 133 :o
