I've noticed a lot of pointless replies on the forums recently, mostly in GD. Take this thread for example. It's a good topic of discussion but a lot of the replies are simply "Yes, no, maybe". If you're only going to post one word answers to a topic such as this, why bother? Who cares if your life has changed if you're not going to bother posting even a brief outline of some details?

This aforementioned thread is only an example, these sort of posts are a regular occurence and appear to be on the increase. I know it's GD and the odd one-liner post is expected (I post one-liners quite often but they're not as brief as 'yes or no') but single yes or no isn't offering any contribution to the discussion at all.

Has anyone noticed an increase in such replies? I'm not ranting, just wondering if anyone else has spotted the increasing trend.

What are your views on the subject? Discuss.

I purposely worded it so I wouldn't get any one word answers. Don't even try it or I'll fart in your general direction.

It was always going to.

To be fair, pointless replies have always been a bastion of GD. Thats what you get for posting in here. Its unavoidable.

Yeah I know but single word 'yes' or 'no' replies really take the mickey, especially when they trend towards becoming the majority of the posts in GD. I've been on these forums for 5-6 years and have seen GD go through it's cycles many times, maybe I'm just getting bored with it all. Speakers Corner is too serious and GD is becoming spammier, why can't we just have a happy medium?

The GD bi-annual cycle rears its head again :p

Yeah I notice it. I get frustrated if a thread has potential but people don't put the effort in, GD could be a lot better. It sometimes seems that, unless there's a moral or political point to argue, or some 'advice' to dish out, people just cant be bothered.

Could this thread be the changing moment? Sure i've noticed it, it's clear we all have.

Question, do you count ":D", "lol" and of course :/ as pointless replies?

I dont mind the :D, lol and :/ replies in a light hearted thread such as a joke thread or in response to a random or funny story. It's when a good thread which encourages discussion is tainted by the one word replies that I get frustrated.

Am I becoming sensible or something? Hope not.

I do. I realise that some think it's acceptable but it's the worst kind of spam in my book. Does my head in.

I wouldn't say there's really much of an increase, may be a little, but not massive. I think for the thread you originally linked, it'll totally depend on the posters style of posting, and especially how much of their personal life they want to reveal to the interweb, as the may not want to. Or it could just be they are trawling through the forums and trying to get a PC+1 quickly, without really going into the thread and thinking fully about what they want to say, and don't want to come back later as they'll likely forget.

Personally, I only post in GD, usually, when I've got a reasonably constructive thing to say, but I do do the odd single word post in some threads in PC/CG when the answer is blatantly obvious or could be solved with a google. But half the time I go back and edit, adding a helpful comment, as I feel like I'm being rude.
