Pokemon card collection - anyone have theirs valued?

I've been a serious collector of Pokémon cards for the past 7 or so years. Pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the older ones and I valued my collection myself based on previously sold items and demand at that time. I forget the exact number but it wasn't far off £120k

Impressive. I assume its mostly coming from a select few cards pushing that value so high?

Yep. A dozen or so graded English/Japanese Charizards from 1996 through to 2005 as well as a couple of Japanese trophy cards:

Wow, was not expecting Pokemon cards to sit rivalling or exceeding those of the MTG cards. And certainly wasn't expecing to see single cards sitting at 6 digit sums in the US!

What lead to this bump? Because last time I was looking casually at these things, they were 4 digit items at best. Now some are x100 over the price back then.

Prominent youtubers opening sealed first edition cards from late 90's/early 2000's has contributed that's for sure! Logan Paul has spent something like $2m on first edition booster boxes (36 packs) which he is opening live on stream (and selling the individual packs beforehand for >$10k to recoup the cash).

I think a lot of people were also looking for a lockdown/pandemic friendly hobby.

Sold mine for £50 last year. Mostly unopened packs that I didn't know what to do with so was happy to offload. I'm sure I didn't get back what I originally spent on them but that's how these things work unless you're really knowledgeable or hit the jackpot with a rare one.

Yep, I think you know you have enough there to buy a very nice house :)

you considered regrading the 1st edition? or go for beckett instead of psa?

it's amazing how much the Charizard card ended up being the one with the highest value. like no others come close. What made Charizard to sought after. I remember as a kid, getting a shiny charizard was the best feeling, while the other shinys i wasn't so worried about.

I had considered it, but on my own review, i dont think it would crossgrade very well, perhaps would get a beckett 9. Top/Bottom is quite off centre so doesnt make it as desirable, and quite frankly im terrified to send a potential mortgage deposit outside to another country. :(

Really hope they weren't unopened packs for the first few generations? Worth a LOT more than £50 per pack :O.

Got a complete base set but no 1st editions or shadowless which from a quick google seem to be the more valuable ones. So guessing its worth a few hundred quid.

My son wants to spend some of his birthday money (£50) on Pokémon cards, he's never been into them before but says you can get some collectables in the packets?

Has he missed the boat with this as a collector, I remember them from school in the mid-late 90's but he's been watching yt videos of pack openings and says some can still be worth money?

Any advice as I have no idea, clearly.

Some can of course, but many many aren't. You won't see any YouTube videos of the ones that are opened worth nothing. And even then, would I trust an opening video that has a rare charizard? I don't think so. If I was looking to make videos like that, I'd consider making a video where I first open one side, slide a charizard in, then open the other side, and many views later I'm making money.

I personally feel £50 on unopened packets is a bit risky. You will be likely left with a load of cards worth nothing. My collection came from buying them when they were £1 and trading with many school friends, and still it's not worth as much as I'd have hoped.

If he wants to get into pokemon to play then that's fine. If it's for collecting just buy the cards as singles and save for the chase rares.

If it's for the thrill of opening an pack to try to "win" a chase card, then for me I'd say no. That's just entry level gambling.

The youtubers who open packs open thousands at £3-£XXXx per pack in value, paid for by ad revenue, patreon etc etc

Cheers Apex & Monty, it does seem like the old yt videos of people buying £100's of FIFA packs and getting nothing of value.

I think he wants both the thrill of opening the packs but wants to collect rare ones and use it as an investment, but he might be better of just buying some crypto.

I think it's just because he was the one every kid loved. And in the video game he was the most powerful by a mile.

Fire breathing flying dragon lizard? vs Turtle with water cannons vs Little dinosaur with a bulb on his back?

It's plain to see why Charizard was the most popular.

Yep buying to "win" on the rares is pretty much like FIFA , except you do have some cards physically in hand.

For £50 , I'd do as you say and lump it on doge coin or something else small that could go up in value. Pokemon isn't it, he'll get 15 or so packs which have to odds stacked against him. I'd rather try it on with 50 scratch cards lol.

It's gambling pure and simple if you are in it to make money.

You would have a higher chance of picking the winner in the grand national and shove £50 on that.

If he wants a card game to play there's plenty of new ones.
