Had a few threads in the past but have poker on my mind at the minute and thought about creating a thread on here for discussion as I know theres a lot of players out there.
I've played poker for a few years now, but this last year it's started to get serious. Especially after I graduated and signed on whilst job hunting, it's been a steady stream of income to allow me to continue a healthy social life and travel through to Newcastle to play football on the weekend.
I've ran into a few members on here playing low stakes single table tournaments (STTs, also known as sit'n'go's) and still play them quite regularly, albeit at higher stakes, but I make my real money on the cash tables. There are some very healthy bonus offers out there to make use of, but only if you know what you're doing.
There's money in online poker, you just need to be disciplined and experienced. If you're interested, read a book or two and give it a whirl. Once your well to grips with the game I'd reccommend Hold em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklanksy and Malmuth. Super System should not be the first poker book you read IMO.
If you're interested in the bonus offers that are around, have a read here. The first four guides are very useful, after that it's clear that it's sponsorship ruling his reviews. After that you can also negotiate rakeback deals with the poker rooms that give you around 30% back of the rake you pay. Depending on your stakes and how much you play, that can be sizeable. Last month I recieved £60 back that I would normally have missed, and this month will be more! That's a free night out! I can't link to this from here but if you wish to know more I'd be happy to help.
I used to purely play STTs, and then dabbled in a bit of NL (No Limit) cash. After reading the bonus hunting link above, I decided to FL (Fixed Limit) but had poor initial results. I read Jenny Harmans chapter on FL play in Super System 2 and went back to it, things improved but it hadn't quite clicked. I've persevered a bit and I think I've cracked it, I'm consistently making money now. It doesn't come easy though!
I now play 4 tables at a time, a mixture of NL and FL. Possibly a couple of STTs in there aswell but I think I'm going to jack them in for a while. I've a +ive ROI (return on investment - basically I make money) but it's pretty enthraulling and sapping, and fourth place (no money) really annoys me. NL cash sees big wins and also big easy wipeouts. I enjoy playing NL and won't stop, but I'm really liking FL at the moment for it's steady away profits. I remember the first time I played 2 tables, what a struggle! Any less than 3 now and I'm bored. It also helps you keep your head and play your good cards.
As a result my live play has suffered! I used to clean up at a local pub on a friday but haven't moneyed there in a couple of months. Now I'm at home I'm rarely playing at a casino but have done on the weekends and again it's been a loss. It's my entertainment for the night though and I'm fully prepared to lose my buy in (I'll make it back in the week
)
I also imagine there'll be a bit of discussion on bad beats, well I hate talking about them. It's all you get in the casinos, "Oh I had this and he had this" STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. I've suffered statistically the worst beat you can ever get: Four of a kind on the flop, pot is raised and re-raised, and I'm delighted when he puts me all in. Pot is ~£90. I have 33, he shows KK. Board is 33Q, turn is a K, river a K. So he had to hit both kings, consecutively to win. I make that 0.00003% to win. What's worse is that I didn't win the bad beat jackpot, as your four of a kind has to be Jacks or higher to qualify. So don't talk to me about bad beats!
I know there's Mikol and Gilly that play on the cryptologic network (Betfair, Will Hill, Sun Poker, Inter Poker etc) but imagine there's a few others. I also get the impression that Rotty is quite handy. So let's see who the players are...
