I'm walking out tonight and I get picked up by the Police.
There has been a spate of criminal activity so they think I might be involved.
I refuse to give any details and at the station fingerprinting/DNA brings nothing up about me.
They don't have any hard evidence on me.

What happens next?

You'd be pretty naive to assume it hasn't happened or that lack of rationality should mean it wouldn't happen. The reality is that there are cases out there where police officers have knowingly pursued a case against an innocent person.

Quite simple really. Taking your example:

You are detained/arrested (dependant on country) on suspicion of committing a crime. This give police certain powers including requiring you to provide your:

Name
DOB
Address
Place of Birth

To refuse this makes you guilty of an offence irrespective of your guilt to the initial suspected offence.

Due to refusing this, you are kept in custody to appear at court on the next lawful day as your identity cannot be verified. After being taken to court, this ends the police involvement. If you further choose to not disclose your details to a sheriff/judge, you can be held in contempt of court and receive another conviction.

What the sheriff/judge chooses to do is upto them but you didn't ask about what they would do, only the police

I don't imagine it's a question that often comes up because most innocent or non-freeman people aren't moronic enough to do time in jail just to stick it to the man and not give their name.

There was a topic on this a few weeks ago. I'm sure someone made the comment along the lines of..

If you don't give the police your name. When it goes to court you can't appeal for bail without identifying yourself. After being convicted of the crime you'd have to do the full sentence because you wouldn't be eligible to apply for parole as you haven't identified yourself.

Initial statement that you are going to say no comment, then no comment to everything, even when they ask your name.

Unless there is anything relating to where they found you (a place associated with a crime) or there is evidence they have found in your possession.
